View Full Version : Grand Cherokee 1 ton build

cmartin

This is my new wheeler. 97 grand Cherokee limited 5.2

Plans
Ford king pin 60 5.38 gears welded
14 bolt 5.38 gears welded
Full frame reinforcement
Exo-cage
At least 38s on bead locks
231 with sye
4 link rear on coils
3 link front on coils
Tons of little stuff

Progress up to this point has been all the metal work looks like I haven't done much but cleaning the frame of all the stock brackets took forever but I think it was worth it in the end. Rear passenger side welded in all the rest of the pieces are cut out and ready to weld in. I did really like the templates. I have been watching to much extreme 4x4 hahaha

The passenger side frame rail almost done. Just need to bend the front up at the fender well. All goes as plan and that will be all one piece. Driver side should go faster.

Nice work frame reinforcement is good idea... We are workin on an xj that's gettin the frame plates ruffstuff makes for em... One question.. Y only 38s if your goin tons? The diffs will drag everywhere.. Go on to a 42" tire u wont regret it

cmartin
05-04-2013, 02:15 PM
38s will be the smallest. I plan on cutting a lot of the body out of the way but didn't know if 42s would just be to big. I would like to do the 13 bolt cover for the rear but down the road. I'm sure that boat anchor will drag everything.

how do you like the ruff stuff rails?

Ruffstuff rails r bad ass and user friendly... I got buddy with some 42 pitbulls for sale... They only measure 40" tall... Look good on that grand

Hear you go bud. Been waiting to post a finished side. Passenger side is done from rear bumper to past transmission. I prepped the driver side from the rear bumper and am going to cut the holes in the box tube for under the cab up past transmission for that side this week. Now that I know what my plan is hopefully I can finish that side in 2 weeks. Then the crossmember needs built

Got the grand up to ride height (we think hahaha) tonight. Axles are under and centered for link measurements. Looks like 116½ wb A couple of pics with tires sitting up against axles. Gonna cut the body for clearance and get some links in the rear next. Thanks huntingmatt418 for all the help tonight

Did you take any ride height measurements before you lifted yours? Just curious what the frame height was before lifted? Or height now with how much lift?

Thanks

didn't measure frame height but measured wheel openings. Have to look it up but it was a 4" lift. When it was fresh, netted 5.5 with the tires. I run 32's

We have to get all three together for a family pic lol. We did 6in long arm, cut rockers, frame stiffeners, built front and rear bumpers, v8 swap, rear dana 44, spartan lockers front and rear and 35in mtrs. It's 98% done will be heading to Harlan in a few week for a test run

the long arms make such a huge difference though in flex. I noticed that it was stiffer just driving on the street, XJ made all kinda noise on the trails.....

If you don't mind just a quick measurement from ground to frame between the front and back door. The ride height we have set it at is 24½ now. Just didn't know if it will be enough or to much. Doing some figuring on my coil buckets

Thanks

I put mine to what ever the instructions for the 4" kit. Seems like it was around 37.5 but that was over a year ago. Could have been 49, I don't know. maybe I will look up the install specs.... I do remember that if you move it too far back. you will have interference with the track bar and or the gas tank.

OK I was just curious what was considered a long arm kit. I am either moving the gas tank up into the cargo area a little and building a new floor or going with a cell in the cargo area haven't decided yet. I moved the axle back and the tank can't stay in the stock location anyway

Was supposed to say 39, not 49.....

If I end up having this rig long enough to get bored with it running on 32's, and go to 35's, I would push the axles out the front and back also but that is a lot more work and mods. I guess that's why we do this stuff anyway so maybe someday.......

Ground to frame where front/rear doors meet is 15" with 2" lift and 31" tires on my 1998 Grand. so roughly 13" bone stock.

Got the the rear finally finish welded and painted around the brackets. Gonna put the links back in hopefully for the last time and have it sitting on its own weight.

I acquired a 4x8 sheet of steel that I'm gonna use for plating the front of the frame. If I do it right should go pretty fast. At least before jay-bird sells it hahaha

Have got alot done here lately. The plate has made this easier. Got the pieces cut out and the passenger side bottom plate and outside plate bent and welded in. Just have to weld the bends up. Moving over to the driver side then going to do the inside plates. ( haven't cut them out yet )

Got a lot done here lately. The spring buckets on and gusseted. All the 3 link bars made and tacked in. Test flexed without the springs. Panhard bar has a finger width clearance under the oil pan at full bump. No binding issues I could see. Put springs back in and cut the driverside rear fender out. Hopefully have the tires on today and test flex with everything on.

Test flex went good. Took it up 20". That was all the farther I felt comfortable doing with a jack under the tire.
Still had plently of room to go with the springs. But need a lot of trimming on the rear outside fenders. And I took the door trim off. I like the clean look without them

x2... I don't believe that finger distance will be enough for deflection of the whole assembly... good news is that it will "self clearance" fairly easily, the bad news is that the potential damage to an oil pickup could cause serious problems down the trail...

Just my opinion... :beers:

Looking great!

X3... I thought I had enough room between my oil pan and my steering ram, but after bottoming the front end hard a few times it made a nice imprint in the pan. Luckily, no leaks.

Ordered a custom fuel cell from RCI. It is the 30*12*9 but I had them not put in the sending unit or pick up lines on it. I bought a fuel cell adapter ring from genright that uses the stock jeep sender with the In tank pump and regulator.

Got the jeep spun around in the garage this past weekend. Now I can start on the driver side rear fender.

Took a break on the fenders to work on the steering a little bit. Got the new pump.

Made templates for the orbital mount. Plan on using the steering gear mounting holes to bolt the mount to the frame

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/20/y4y5a3u2.jpg

And cut the steering shaft so it will slip in and out. It was pressed at the stock length. Grinded off the pressed part and now it slips

Stock length 21"

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/20/y8ehuse5.jpg

Collapsed to 16"

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/20/8u6ubepa.jpg

Also had to file a little on the inner shaft cause it had some kind of a coating that made it to tight to slip easy.

cmartin
02-26-2014, 12:23 AM
Got the bracket for the orbital made up. It was harder than I thought it would be to fit it in there. It ended making the steering shaft a little closer to the header than I wanted but ended up good. If I would have angled it the orbital lines would have ran close to the belt.

The reason for the bracket. The unibody has an offset where the steering box was.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/26/taje6yzu.jpg

Test fit

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/26/6atape2a.jpg

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/26/egeby4er.jpg

All mounted up

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/26/umyzyqyb.jpg

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/26/5asy8eju.jpg

Ran wire for the lengths of the hydro lines. Got them all mocked up.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/26/neve3ava.jpg

Back on the fenders. Got the fuel door opening closed up. The opening had a rolled lip that made it easy to fit the filler piece in and weld. I completely welded the outside and put a lot of tacks on the inside on that lip.

That winch plate looks like it sits kinda low but i guess your rig sits a lot higher than mine. My winch plate will be even with the top of the bumper cover to maintain as much approach angle as possible. I might have it mounted by June if I'm lucky......

Still a real good looking build, hope we can get the twins together sometime this year?

cmartin
04-19-2014, 10:16 PM
The way I plated the frame in front the plate sits even with the bottom of the frame. I originally did it that way so the radiator wouldn't be blocked by the winch. I haven't committed to the winch mount yet. I am going to build the exo around it and see how it goes.

We will definitely get together for some ZJ wheeling. I hope to have it finished in June

Got the fuel cell mounted and plumbed for the most part. Had to wait on the sending unit fitting for 3 weeks.

Still a few more bars and gussets and bars to go but may be done until it comes off for final weld.

Plan is to take the mirrors and the grill and headlight housing off for paint anyway and lift the front up and take it out the back. Hopefully it is wide enough to get it off. Fingers crossed

Wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. Lifted right off without the headlight panel on and with some muscle it came off. Rubbed the front fenders a little. We will have to have blankets over the jeep and rags over the bars to protect the new paint.

All bars on and ready to come off.

Got it back today. The pics don't give the color justice. Kold steel kustomz in Middletown did a great job with a al the moisture problems we had. So over the rain.

Only thing putting the cage back on. One of my helpers had a wedding ring on and the cage pinned it between the cage and door.

Repainted the beadlocks rings and re sealed the beads. Also added 14 Oz of bbs in the tires to balance them.
