I'm in for at least Saturday. Can't wait to conquer some new trails.
Little PSA to everyone
This is an opportunity to help a park identify and build the kind of trials you want to run. We did this last year and I think everyone that went had a great time. We rode trails for at least as much as we worked to clear stuff. First one up the trail gets to name it!
Last trip we opened up:
1 rock garden (no real work... just drove it a few times on a few different lines)
1 trail that was about .5 miles long. other than getting out to walk it in a few places to identify the lines and pull a downed tree or two out of the way; we stayed in the trucks the whole time
1 nasty trail that required some walking and cutting a few trees out of the way that no one has made it up yet.
We also rode a bunch of existing trails throughout the park.
Hope to see everyone there.

I like the idea of meeting at the Meijer's on 32 Friday at noon. Last time we went there we took 32 to 73 to 23 to 67 on in to Rush. When we came home we went all the way down AA. Personally I hate AA. People don't care and ride next to you coming up the truck lanes and run you off the road. :at-wits'end: The aggravation level is a lot less on 32 IMO...
What ya'll think?

They do, you just have to be able to pull up the hill to get to it. I spun out on the hill last time, had to go to 4wd in the super duty. A good run at it and you might have it. Don't try to creep it though.

All camping is primitive. There are plans on building a shower house but they had to put on the back burner. Park owner had to have the road crossing redone to make the state happy. Also, there is a KOA campground a short drive from the park.

I am rethinking Friday because it seems a lot of people will arrive late afternoon Friday. If so, I would make it early Saturday morning, clean trails and camp Saturday night. Any trail clearing or riding panned for Sunday?

The main group is meeting noon Friday at Eastgate Meijer (888 Eastgate N Rd, 45245). I275 to SR32, Exit 63. Go a mile east, and it's on the left. We'll convoy out from there.

I hope I can get to the stage of building the jeep for which it was originally designed. I want to be able to just load it up, wheel it hard and load it up again. I just ordered some Bilsteins that have to be installed before the 14th.
Saturday when it was 50 degF I cut some firewood for the campfire at Rush. Then I decided to check the furthest field back for down trees and found 3 down. That took the rest of the afternoon to clean up. I may wear out a chain saw before I even get to Rush.
With all this unplanned work I am almost afraid to nut and bolt the rig before the ride. You never know what you might find...

Mark, I have the GPS track of the trail we made last time we were there. I need to get it to the person making the GPS map. The file is attached and named appropriately. It wiped out my door and window last time.
I would like to get this trail cleaned up while we're there.

Mark, I should be there about 1300 and will find a camping spot. I'll link up with you by 3pm.
The only spot I can think of is a trail Mike, Bill B and I worked on over a year ago. It's on 11 not far from Rock God in a left hand curve but I'd have to see the trail entrance to ID it.

Tic-toc!
Is anybody else still wrenchin? I ditched my mangled hatch and built a cheap bulkhead instead. Just got the cb antenna remounted, and still want to add a couple tiedowns to keep stuff in the now-open bed. I may even try to rehang my exhaust stub. But I'll be there!
Is it just me, Hodgie, Andy, and Kevin meeting at Meijer? Jeremy said "at the meeting place," but didn't say which one...
Accuweather is predicting a low of 43 Friday night, and 37 Saturday. I may try camping, knowing I can head into town if it stops being fun.

The Trail system at the park is coming together very nicely. Thanks again to Mark for setting up the trail clearing weekend and showing us around the park. With no greenery you can see rock everywhere!! With enough riding this place will be an amazing spot to ride. I highly recommend everyone try to get down there and see what it is about.
Trail cutting report:
The trail we cut, was partially opened by our group last fall. It comes off the main trail where you drop into a creek with a really cool smooth rock bottom, then you turn out of the creek up a tight ravine with some rocks and holes. It will flex out your suspension and get you far off camber. This will only get better as more people run it. It then flattens out into a little rock lined creek with some small climbs over tree stumps and roots. The creek then narrows so that you have to lay your rig over almost on its side (see Jimmy C in pictures above) to get to the exits. (we also cut in a bypass for this section if you have pretty body panels). Just before the exit there is a 5 ft rock pile in the creek to climb. The exit is a tall rocky climb that requires some momentum and some serious tires. There is 4 ft hole infront of a rock face 3/4 way up the exit (picture of Kevin rig above) Kevin gave all of us a show coming up this hill, getting both drivers side tires up in the air. The drivers front was at least 4 ft off the ground.
There are 2 other ravines that need to be opened to give optionally harder lines for the exit. Both are rock lined and look like they will be really fun once a few trees are removed.
to the left of nearly the whole trail is huge (1/4 mil long) rock shelf sticking out the side of the hill. There is potential to have lots of trails going up or down it ranging from mild to wild.
Ok, so we need to come up with a name for this trial. what are peoples Ideas.
I suggest Hard-Core

Had a blast! Great time and plenty of carnage. The place is enormous, and the potential is amazing. Jim was great at spotting future trails and climbs, everywhere we stopped.
As for the trail we cut, I was just thinking CORE Creek, but HardCORE is cooler.
I do think CORE should be all caps, to reflect the club's acronym.
Looking forward to going back!

We loved it! The place was huge. We saw a small portion of this place and I can only imagine how much better it will become with more use.
I do think that we should think about working on a bypass for the last hill climb out of the creek trail we did. We ( the weak and timid who couldn't make it) wound up doubling back on the trail to get back out. In order to stick with the group and moving forward we should think about a bypass next time we are there.
I have some decent videos to post up too.
Thank you to Mark and Rush for letting us come out and check the place out. We will certainly be coming back.

Had a great time with everyone this weekend, I was way overdue for a outing with the group. Special thanks to Jeff & Jim Smith for working hard with us clearing the trail for us, thanks also to Chris hodgie s buddy in the land cruiser Dustin I think ? for helping us also. The day went way to quick it seemed but we got a lot accomplished and had a awesome time, it was great to meet a few people from Ugly offoroad... John and Heather in 1 Rig and Sherman and Mindy in the other..... I'm hoping I got your names right, you all we awesome people with great rigs and really look forward to getting together and wheeling with you in the future... Exactly this. I feel great about the amount of work we got done, but I think it's a long way from calling it finished. If we've got an open invite to improve the trail we started, I'd really like to:
- Add a bypass exit up to the top of the hill, to meet up with the other side of the Trail #2 loop
- Clear the next two ravines that Jim Busch was talking about, and
- Eventually open up more of the smooth-bottom creek, where Hodgie was cutting up that enormous fallen tree that blocked the way. Maybe create a SoftCORE alternative to the branch we were in.
All in due time!
For the record, I think the final carnage tally was:
Andy M: Busted trailer ramp
Me: Ripped out the rear brake line
Jeff S: Broke a heim and (I thought) suffered some sort of electrical fire
Jim S: Stripped a 35 spline hub
Hodgie: Turned each of his quarter-panel guards inside-out
Jim B: Blew his steering pump
Kevin: Broke a main leaf and destroyed his left rear swamper
Jim C: Wrapped his cab corner around a tree
I guess that Travis kid was the only one to escape unscathed!
(And yes, Andy, the trailer ramp counts!)

I probably have an unpopular opinion... but I dislike bypasses on the hard trails. I do not think the exit is that bad, 3 of our rigs went up it without too much issues. I bet a rzr could make that climb. If you want to run big boy trails run them, they might require winching a hill or two. I think that should be expected. If you want something easier try the medium trails. In my experience the bypasses break up the feel of being on a trail and make it feel more like going from obstacle to obstacle instead of a continuous trail. For example the "red trail" at the Badlands is this way; there are bypasses past everything and it doesn't feel like a trail at all.
Just my 2 cents!
With that said I would be happy to help open some medium trails. I just think there should be multiple levels of trails to offer a challenge to different vehicles.
I am happy with the trail that we made. I think it will be awesome with some traffic. I can't wait to open up the other ravines coming off of it.

I think Jim said it right, we can focus on making medium rated trails, you have to keep an open mind for everyone to wheel, a easy trail can turn medium quick in a rain shower and a medium can turn extreme in certain conditions also... There is gonna be something to offer everyone as time & effort moves forward. I'm hoping Mark & the land owner will give us another opportunity to help make Rush offroad park a great place for everyone to wheel.
