Tim took it in the ass on that trade. That rzr is a ragged out piece of junk. I hope you made out better than he did...

Looks like the only change was the tires and wheels. What size are they now?

I traded him a jeep on tons and we keep our tires. I have a set of 44 tsl to put on it but I have to make the beadlocks for them still.

The tires on it are 38's right now. They look small on there

His 39.5's looked small too. 44's will look good. I don't think the rear axles will handle them. The dana 70 has an odd spline count. 17 I believe

well guess I will run it till it breaks. and replace it with a 14bolt later.

I was told the axles have 488 gears, is that true?

Yes, it has 4.88's. I was looking in to changing the carrier to a newer 35 spline so you could get cromo axles.

Sent from my SM-G930V using TapatalkNo I have not changed it yet. I guess I will see how it holds up. Try to take it easy on it.

Did it ever brake with the 39?

I wonder what the cost of upgrading the D70 carrier and buying new shafts is compared to slapping in a 14-bolt with 4.88 gears?

kyrel69
03-05-2018, 07:11 PM
I seem to recall it breaking a shaft before. What you have is the older coarse 23 spline d70. Think these have 1.5" shafts but they neck down pretty far. Something like 1.2". The trick is knowing whether you have a .5" offset carrier or not as I think this makes a big difference when trying to put the bigger 35spline stuff in, source parts, and have it all line up correctly.

well I will have to try to figure out what carrier is in it so I know what parts to look for. I have a friend that has some dana 70 parts but who know if they will fit or now

As for the cost. Well I looked last night and the cheapest 14 bolt axle I found uses was 250 and the cheapest 488 gear for about 185 shipped. So I am going to be on the look out for both and hope that the 70 holds till then.

any of you guys know if that rear is a 2 part carrier or not?

03-06-2018, 03:41 PM
Yes, he broke the pass rear. It broke on steel hill in Harlan. He wasn't really getting on it either. Watch out for low low. It breaks stuff.

I researched this way back and there were like 3 different versions of pinion offset. I believe it's a 2 piece carrier, which if I recall would make it easier to swap to 35 spline. Unless the spiders are welded to the carrier. It sucks that only moly shafts are 32 or 35 spline.

we will see if I can get everything done by then,,, I still have to upgrade the stearing now with the 44 think I am going to need a ram to move the tires

Yeah ram and full hydro is what I have on my jeep. It turns 40's like nothing.

Just an fyi, having coarse 23 spline axles means you also have a coarse 10 spline pinion. Not sure if that'll handle 44's and a big block once you get tired of taking it easy.

If you're inclined to upgrade the pinion by replacing the r&p this would be a good option. It's called the Jana 87 mod. This puts Dana 80 gears in a 70 housing, accepts 35 & 37spl shafts and if you can weld a carrier yourself you'll save some coin. I think your spindles will fit 37 spline, but not positive. I'll include a link below or you can google (Jana 87). He doesn't list it (never did) but I believe he still supplies the parts to convert.

thansk,, I will keep this all in mind. Got a buddy with a nother CC dana 70 so going to see if those parts will fit mine so it will be a cheap upgrade

Going to try an ram assist steering with 2in ram and see how that works since I have the ram and just need to buy hoses and tap the steering box and make mounds. Just the steering box move the 38's I had on it with easy so I am hoping the ram will make it work with the 44's

Here's my set up. This is full hydro, orbital valve. You could mount your ram like mine right off the axle housing, then connecting to the steering tie rod. Literally can use one finger to turn my wheels. It's very nice. I got this ram on Ebay, you can get the, at tracker supply though.

I had tapped the steering box on that rig for hydraulic assist but Tim caught a rock going down the trail and bent the shaft in the Box. I didn't tap the new one. You may be able to get away with hydraulic assist depending on what type of terrain you ride in. I would say Forty Fours and lot of rocks May kill the pump sooner. At least you got a Saginaw pump now instead of that Ford junk that was on there.
The Dana 70 might hold up for you depending on your driving Style. We don't know what kind of abuse that axle had taken before Tim got it. That Axel is really old.
The thing always needed better steering and either fuel injection or propane. Never could get the Holly to run right.
I would probably at some point change the stock Spicer joints in the front axle and go with some type of chromoly like a Yukon super joints. I messed up two sets of axles by breaking the Spicer joint so I ended up going with the Yukon super joints. Some say I have an aggressive driving style though. [emoji848]
