Well, being without a job has given me a lot of time to work on this damn rig... Idle hands are the tool of the devil.

I put some catch cans, or curved plates more than cans i guess. I wanted to attach these since my bumps hit my links, and the links have some movement left and right under articulation. These will allow the bump to still hit a surface when this happens.

I just hope that welding these on won't weaken these links too much. but then again, i see all kinds of comp rigs etc that have the air shock mounts etc welded to this link, and that is a lot more stress than this bump will be.

finally finished the dash and all the floor panels. what a *****. got pretty good by the end, figuring out which way to bend and break the plates. I will tell you i will never again use round tubing to do the trans/tcase tunnel. Square tubing would have made it so much easier.

some might say im overkill with so many tabs and 3/8 bolts, but it's what i had, and wanted all the tabs everywhere to be the same. What the large amount are for more than anything is to keep the sound and buzzing down.

And now starts the tear-down for final welding. I can only dream that it will go back together as quick... hahhah.

Here are some shots of the rig at full compression. Took off the air shocks, and the bumps are sitting at full compression on their pads. Clearance is pretty damn tight in a couple areas, mainly with the rotors and chassis. But even with jumping up and down on it really hard with my full fat ass weight, i can't get them to hit, so all should be good to go I guess.

Starts to look funny as an empty carcass again. All that's left to remove is the axles and links, and i will be welding for 2 days straight or so.

More to come soon. Recruited my daughter to screw bolts into all the tabs so that they don't get a bunch of weld spatter in them. I'd rather waste a few bolts than have to run a tap through every tab.

Looks good Mike , So what is your plan of attack ? You gonna start at one corner and work( weld ) your way all the way around or something else . I know I always seem to forget a weld and don't catch it until paint :beers:

Holy hell that floor had to take forever! I took the lazy way out and just put panels for my firewall, trans tunnel, and where my feet go. Everything under the seats back is open, lol! And Hood pins are a stupid PITA. Nice work on everything!!!

carwash
11-08-2008, 10:39 PM
I'm glad someone else knows my Hood Pin pain. Yes the floor took about 2 years, hahhah. I wanted the whole floor in 1/8 and firewall in 1/4 for protection. Lots of driveshaft parts etc, i'd rather not have as a part of my ass or back of my legs... peace of mind i guess.

Sarge, i plan on jumping around quite a bit, to keep the warpage to a minimum. I will make sure i don't miss any, don't worry. You can come down and do a once over on it for me.

Well, I'm about 3/4 done welding the chassis. Would be done, but had to pause to add some more bracing on the lower link mounts. It's funny, didn't think at all about them being weak until i had it all tore down and was looking at it.

Sucked, cuz i had to do some recalling and picture searching to see what kind of bracing i could put where. It's like 10 gallons of **** in a 5 gallon bucket under there. Can't imagine building a smaller narrower rig.... where does everything go?

Here are some shots of it before i started welding it, i thought it looked pretty cool. Also, i wish i had finish welded some parts of it before moving on, as there are quite a few spots that are really hard to get to know... Some of my welds are starting to look mediocre as well, pusing 4-6 hours at a time probably isnt smart.

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_758.jpg

And it's bizzarre how much more space a rig takes up when it is disassembled. I can't even move inside the shop now.

And here are a couple shots of of the extra bracing i put on the link mounts. I hope it holds, it's about the best i can do with the space i am given. the front only has the vertical brace on one side, as the other side has the pillow block mount. Cross your fingers.

I have a suggestion , Why dont you just do a one color paint and then have a wrap made . Makes trail scars so much easier to cover up . :beers:

cuz chicks dig trail scars... what do you care anyway, you don't even wheel anymore fag.

i have thought of that idea tho, just doing my panels in a plain red, then getting decals to apply. But i thought it would be cool to do the multi step process, just to do it. Thing is tho, then i'm stuck with the paint job.

Well, my painter left about an hour ago. Had the chassis, links, couple panels, etc all electrostatically painted. Amazing process, blew me away actually. Chassis charged negative, paint charged positive, just like powder coating, but no oven and it's done on-site, with no overspray at all. It's a perfectly clean and mess free process. Should be easier to paint match as well, powercoating is a ***** to paint match in a rattle can or spray. Painter left me about a quart of extra paint as well, ready to use for touch up.

Was primed first in a standard epoxy primer. The prep work to paint took me freakin' forever. Wiped it all twice with denatured alcohol after wirebrushing the entire thing. I wanted the paint to stick well and look good.

Here are some shots of it in prime. The primer isn't that different than the actual color. Went a little darker on the paint, close to a battleship gray. This paint mfr. called it "platform gray".

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_784.jpg

The paint application is bizarre. I was expecting a fog of paint, like an hvlp gun throws, but it was more like fine paint spatter drops coming out from an odd slinging ring. It wraps right around the tube covering almost the entire tube while painting from one side.

Some shots of it painted... I was amazed at the thickness of the paint and the high gloss that it dried with.

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_787.jpg

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_788.jpg

All that is required is that the part being painted can be grounded. he did this by tying into the ground of my shop through an outlet. I also had my links, supports, crossmember, bump cans, etc painted. I rigged up a piece of hanging metal, then hung each part from it by wired. This way he only had to attach to one part and the entire rack of parts was grounded. I did the two rear inner panels the same color as the chassis as well to make the outer panel pop more. they are aluminum, so we will cross or fingers to see how well the paint holds up on them.

when i worked at honda, that is how all the cars were painted in the surfacer booth, the cars had a negative charge, guns positive. you didn't even have to aim at hte cars to paint them (line 2 was painted by people, new line was robotic). it was awesome painting in there all night, really sucked when you got the gun close to your zipper though when touching the trigger, felt like someone was ripping your pubes out.

chasis looks awesome, can't wait to see it assembled and the skins painted! great choice of colors! i love a gray chasis!

I don't think im gonna touch it until this weekend. I have spent WAY too much time out in the shop the past few weeks, and with the holidays coming up, i'm sure i will be a bit busy.

I also wanted to let it cure for a few days for sure, just to be sure it was not going to get fudged. I still need to do some axle prep and welding, etc. Have a motor to build, etc...

The rebuild is really a good time, so far. Couple glitches here and there, but nothing that i can't easily fix. Here are some shots of reassembly.

Final weld and paint and steering on front axle, and hung under.

Here, front and rear under and ready to roll...

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_801.jpg

And here is my first glitch... the bottom left bolt boss on my TH400 busted off. Don't know when or how. Looks like it had been broken for a long time because the there was a lot of oil down in the cast. Only about 1/6th of the hole is gone. I can see the bolt as it threads in, but it seems to hold some. Im gonna run it, would you? I torqued down the remaining 5 really good, and put a good amount of tightness on the broken one, and it seems to be holding just fine.

Cross your fingers for me.

Second glitch: Set my tranny in place, got it where it needs to go. There are 6 bolts that hold it to the STAK. Two of them are put in with the adapter as i bolt it to the trans. If not, you can't get them into it. Well one of those, the bottom one, is blocked by the plate on my trans skid. I can't get to the damn thing to tighten it. So i had to cut a 2x10" section out of the 1/4" plate so that i could get a wrench up there. Sucks to have to cut and grind on the freshly painted parts, oh well.

Well damn.... never thought it would be so difficult to stick a t-case into a rig, especially when the damn rig was built around the tcase. you'd think it would slip right in... nope.

It goes in thru the top, sideways, then slips in, turn and slides over. Has to clear the tabs for the back mount the somehow slide under the bar that give is about 1/16" clearance, then somehow get the splines to meet up with the tranny, then somehow get some damn rtv smeared on it.

If that isnt bad enough, 2 of the 6 bolts that hold it all together are damn near impossible to get to. And then they tighten at the rate of about a 1/10 of a turn at a time. Christ. I have dealt with trannys and tcases in tights spots before, but this is ridiculous. And being all tube, it seems like it would be a lot easier. ugh.

Here are some shot of the tranny tcase combo in place and bolted in, waiting for the engine.

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_811.jpg

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_812.jpg

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_813.jpg

So, here is the bolt that added about a half hour to this process. this is the same bolt that required i cut this panel out of the freshly painted skid plate. That sucked.

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_814.jpg

And for those that asked (again) about the skid being solid mounted, you can see the poly mounts in this pic. There are four, one at each corner. You can only see two in this pic, but the other two are just opposite.

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_815.jpg

I have decided that if (read WHEN) i need to pull this tcase and trans back out for any kind of repair or replacement, i'm going to cut out the interior tubing for easier access. It is all non-structural tubing and would make install and take out much much easier. I thought about doing it right now, but can't bring myself to cutting apart the freshly painted thing... ugh. No reason to do it now tho, will be just as fast and easy when it comes time, sawzall, etc. Flanges, squirt some metal, done.

Maybe i will get lucky and never have to pull it... hahaahhah.

So, now motor teardown for rebuild... I'm on a roll now.

We should have done some more checking on the motor before doing any work to it at all. put new oil pump and screen on, put new cam in, new timing on it, then started charging the cylinders to pull the springs... Or i should say we TRIED to charge the cylinders, and couldn't get one of them to hold any air. In fact, the valves were so hung open that it was spewing RUST and **** out the intake and exhaust ports...

So, in my opinion, that motor is junk. It's the orange one in the back of the truck in the pic below. Has peanut port heads, recessed pistons, and way too big combustion chambers to make any power, to make it worth a $400 head rebuild. Piece of crap, was only supposed to be a temporary motor until i built my second one.

So, we move to the second motor, GenV truck motor. Also peanut heads, but smaller chambers, etc. We put air to each cylinder, and they are sealed up perfect, until the 8th one. Bent valve, bad. So bent i could hardly hammer it in. So, this motor also was so low power that it wasn't worth putting a $400 head job into. I was only using this one for the block originally to build up.

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_820.jpg

So back to the drawing board, i needed a motor. My buddy Byron's (ITTLFLI on here) father happens to be a great motor builder, and happened to have a motor for me that had just built and dyno'd. Even better, he offered to trade it to me for these two motors, some parts, and a little cash. So of course i jumped on it... here it is below...

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_821.jpg

GenVI 454, .030 over, roller lifters, domed pistons, oversized pushrods, 088 rect port heads, rect port alum GM intake, etc... Did 407hp and 486 lb/ft of torque on the dyno, he included the sheet with it. Should be all the motor i need.

I ordered a set of rocker studs for it so i can throw my rollers on it and had to exchange the flex plate, as they are different between MarkIV and GenVI. So, should drop it in next week, let you know how it goes.

I'm jealous of that motor, especially considering I'm use to 160 h.p. in a 6,000 lb. truck.... 78Buford runs a 460 that desktop dyno'd (take that number for what it's worth, but usually at least within reason) at 340 hp, 525 ft-lbs. He can hit 5,000 rpm at will with a 19:1 overall ratio in a 6,000 lb. truck with 42's, so that's crazy wheelspeed.

Byron and the crew came down last night and we tossed it in there, after installing a stud kit and my HS roller rockers. With motor in, i have just enough room for an air cleaner (once i find one that will work for me...) under the closed hood. Sweet, as that was a big worry.

How big does it have to be? I have a plastic one sitting here with about 3" inlet, and its probably 3.5" where it bolts to the carb/throttle body, and its about 2" tall. I'll run out and measure it in a min to get the real numbers, but if it'll work you can have it

Brake pedals in, propane parts mounted, trans shield in (had to redrill all the holes and use thru bolts, this was *****, since it's already installed), rear floors in, rear seat in, rear interior side panels on, front suspension adjusted, damn, wheels/tires back on, converted yokes back on the STAK, driveshafts in, pillow block mounted. Every bit of my brake system is 1/8 npt fittings, masters cylinders, all compression fittings, calipers, ball valves. Everything except my brake light switch, it has inverted flare. So i either need to find adapters or find a different brake light switch.

My thing is will the ID of the lines be enough to move enough fluid.
Will it weaken as the brake fluid get's really hot and will it hold the heat in the lines to well. I am very much wanting to see how these lines work out.

the more i think about it, the less i want to use them...

Spent a full day on it today...

got power steering pump on, finally got replacement pump from station. He sent me his new improved super pimp bad ass pump. Pulley installed on it, measured for a serp belt...Buy two at a time i guess, not bad to carry a spare. I wish the steering pulley wasn't aluminum, as i'm concerned if i have to remove it to swap pumps later or something, that i wont get any more use than just once out of it. Guess i could have one made from steel if need be.

Filled the STAK with fluid, so that i could put the last floor panel in. Gear oil was like glue, since it had been in the shop in the cold, so i heated it in front of the torpedo, still flowed crazy slow thru my tubing funnel thingy. I was a retard, and neglected to look at my STAK directions packet before starting to fill. I wasn't thinking at all, and just started throwing fluid in it, waiting for it to come out the fill hole, telling me it was full. When I got to 4 quarts, i realized that was way too much fluid, ha! So, i rifled thru all my stacks and stacks of paperwork looking for the STAK packet. In the meantime, i dialed up Jess at High Angle, knowing he would know that answer on capacity. Just as he said "2 quarts" i found the paperwork that says, "2 quarts". So i drained the damn thing, of course it drains right onto the damn crossmember, oh joy. I collected it all back into bottles, well almost all of it. Almost a quart stayed in the damn thing, the cold of the case turned it back into glue. Anyway, got 2 quarts back in it, plugged it and put the final floor panel on. Interior is complete. Even got the driver seat installed and seatbelts all bolted up...

List left of to do crap:
wiring
plumbing
steering lines
trans lines
radiator hoses
propane main feed line
axle vent hoses
air filter setup
prep and paint panels / hood / cowl
brake lines
switch panel
exhaust
fluids - diffs, trans, motor, steering
limit straps

ugh, im sure im forgetting about 3700 things.

Ok, so next problem. With my required pulley setup, i had to relocate my alternator way high an on the right, directly in line with where my rad hose would head to the radiator from the water outlet.

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_863.jpg

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_865.jpg

So I'm looking for a water outlet for a sbc or bbc that points somewhere around the 6:00 position. Then i also need a hose that can snaked around the alternator and still get to the inlet on the radiator.

I found some on summit that rotate 360 degrees, and some hoses that bend and kink where you want them...

This fitting has a nice 90 degree, and i can stick it where i want it. Its damn cheap too, which is odd for anything from summit lately it seems.

http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/sum-371101.jpg

And here is a hose, that is stainless and flexible, comes with clamps, adapter ends, etc, but the damn thing is 80 bucks... guess i will look for something else, i can't pay 80 bucks for a radiator hose.

http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/sum-390136.jpg

Today is brake lines, wish me luck. Shouldn't take too long. If i do decide i dont like the plastic lines or I'm afraid of them, what are my options for non plastic lines that use 1/8 npt fittings on the ends?

Ok, so i started installing the plastic brake lines... here is a shot of the lines that go to and from the brake lockoff valves, and then some close up shots of each of the valves.

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_868.jpg

And here is a shot of the lines from the master cylinders thru the firewall, and then back thru from the valves, etc...

http://www.sigmamotorsports.com/ImageFolio4_files/gallery/Shop_Projects/Off_Road_Projects/YJ_Tube_Buggy/06buggy_869.jpg

And after doing all of this, and running the lines to the front and rear of the vehicle... i have decided to not run them. I don't like the way they look, work, feel, etc...

I'm afraid of them being nicked, snagged, ripped, etc. Even if i put all of the lines inside a protective sheath, like fuel line etc, then i won't be able to find a burst if (when) it happens.

I just dont trust them, so i'm gonna pull them all out and go with steel lines through out. Peace of mind i guess.

for your upper rad. hose , make one out of some exhaust tubing or scrap DOM . Use short rubber ends to mate it to the Rad. and the therm. housing and your good to go. You can bend your self or buy s few pre-bent pieces from Summit. Just brainstorming for ya.

if you do that you will want to role a bead or weld a bead on the end of the tube for the hose to have something to bite on or when the pressure builds up the rubber hose will slide off and make a very nice mess of all your pretty parts (speaking from experience)

not sure if i even have room for a tube bend in there. But at this point, thats my plan. Might look for a factory hose that has a 90. I did buy an adjustble swivel 45 water neck, so the outlet isn't stuck behind the alternator anymore. Bend me up a wire to match my hose and head to the parts store i guess.

Good call on the welding a bead on the welded tube, thanks.

Got rear limit straps done. Had to shave the top of one side of my link mounts for the straps to work. when tightened it was puting the webbing right against metal. wouldnt last long that way. Still have to do the fronts.

So i had to cut a hole, yet somehow still leave some meat on the dash for the holes to hold the damn thing in. Measure 90 times, cut 90 times... a little at a time.

ok... trying to button this thing down. for those of you that haven't seen my other thread, i'm having some propane delivery issues i believe, can't get it to run well, idle, etc.

So, first thing on the list was to get my cooling set up well, so that i can keep the motor and evaporator cool enough to mess with it long enough to try and tune it.

If you recall, i was very worried about my top radiator hose and it clearing my alt pulley. Last night i spent about an hour and a half at the local AZ, with some bent coat hangers, trying to source some hoses for my top and bottom. I was successful, and the **** looks like it was made for the rig... so that's good.

Not a guru, but I got a 99 vortec run on a pieced together propane set up. I had trouble starting mine the first time because the throttle plate was closed too much and wouldn't let enough vacume through to suck in the propane. I opened it up just alittle and VROOOM VROOM! You might try that, and if its a used set up it could have a dried out diaphram...

the setup is freshly rebuilt (supposedly). Got it from Roy, out of canada, GotPropane.

I can't figure it out. Today i go out, fired it up, it runs great, damn near idles. I shut it down, and can't get it to restart, barely even chokes. I open the flies all the way up to clean it out, and it farts a little, then thats it.

It's like the longer it sits, the better it does. Almost like its getting too much pane or something. I need a propane genius to pay me a visit.

Just read through the pirate thread again. You said the longer it sits the easier it seems to try to start, and that only the front 4 cyl seem to be firing. That sounds like you aren't getting enough fuel. Have you checked for vacume leaks? From what I understand a propane system works on pressure from the tank, and vacume from the motor. If the tank is full it has pressure. If there is a leak it might not have enough vacume to open the lock off valve all the way, or even open the diaphram in the mixer.

Rig is coming along, dealing with a propane gremlin. Figured one out and still chasing another. First one was simple, had to route my heater hoses differently. Had the hoses both pushing into the regulator. hard to get flow that way.

So, DO NOT do it like this:

Do it like this:

The whole propane issue can be followed here if yer interested at all or have any input. My next step is to tear into the mixer, look for any issue.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=804097

Got my wiring all buttoned down, and except for replacing one bulb in a gauge, it's 100% and i can put my side panels on. Props to seabass, the man rules and saved me an extra week of work im sure...

Coming right along, put some more nitrogen in the shocks, get exhaust done, finish my propane suckiness, and that should just about do it.

I actually drove it in the other night, 2 feet forward and 2 feet in reverse, just to make sure the trans and tcase actually worked... it was exhilarating to say the least!

Well, I'm down to buttoning up all the loose ends. Still have my propane issue, but i'm closer to solving it...

For the most part the rig is done, need to get exhaust, which will happen on weds or thurs this week. I will have a crossover pipe to the driver side, then 3 inch all the way back. going to have a hard time fitting any kind of muffler in there, wish me luck.

All fluids are finalized, and i have driven it around the yard and house about a half hour, waiting for something to rattle off or blow up or break. Rather it happen there, for sure.

I think I'm going to regret not putting in a sway bar at build time, cuz i'm pretty sure im gonna be adding one. ***** has got some insane scary body roll... thank god for my silly amount of unsprung weight.

I believe the rig was named today... I'm not big on naming my rigs, but it does make it easier to refer to them i guess. I never named this one, as you hate to have it not live up to a name, etc... Besides, the damn thing took so long to build, i probably would have forgotten the name years ago...

Anyway, i posted a pic of bogger tracks on my concrete, as proof of it having left the shop under its own power. Of course everyone cried bull****, etc. And YJnate says that the rig is kinda like The Yeti. Everyone talks about it, but not many have ever seen it in person. Some have caught a glimpse of it, or seen proof of it, like a track or something, etc. The Yeti is also thought to be big, cumbersome, huge feet, i'm sure it smells, etc...

So, that describes this rig perfectly at this point... So from this point on, it will be The Yeti.

Anybody wanna go wheeling?

Exhaust done tonight... i do not envy my exhaust guy, but he does amazing work. Space was so limited, i had concerns that it wasn't even possible to run what i needed.

If you want great work done in this area, lemme know and i will hook you up with him..

2.5 inch all the way back to a flowmaster delta series muffler, tucked up nice and tight to the floor... with small tail exiting. Everything out of harms way, etc...

Hey "SALLY" were going to see you tomorrow too right?

See everyone in the morning and bring your money I will be taking the highest bid on the winch right after the show ends since they will be drawing my ticket. Can't see putting that in my trailer just to pull the jeep in and out.

Again looks awesome see ya tomorrow.

still the same propane issue of not firing after running? we had a jeep do that at slade one time, it would fire perfectly every time we would push start it, but wouldn't fire without a push, he ended up having to replace a couple of orings in the brand new system. worth a shot.

Well, it's running great now with a borrowed mixer. So, I'm on the search for an older style 450 like i have, or a nicely tuned 425. I will steal Jeff's for as long as he will allow tho. Still using more pane than i would like, so i need to run the power valve in a few turns i think.

Got it all decaled up last night with the help of Byron and Ted. So, imma call it done at this point... still some piddly **** to do, but nothing worth posting up on any threads... Coolant reservoir, modify throttle pedal, blah blah blah... See you on the trail.

Did you find an aluminum dush shield for the 400 yet ? I can see if I can come up with one if not .

Oh, looks good by the way ! see this week end

no, repaired my metal one sarge. didn't even take it off (cuz it's a royal ***** to get to without removing lower links, etc). I think it will be fine. Hopefully a fluke that it got hit.

I can see a spot where whatever dented it slid across the oil pan first, so at some point when i have the lowers off, might just make a removable skid plate that covers both the pan and the trans shield.

And no weight yet. Might hit the scales on teh way to gravelrama. Tried to borrow my buddy's longacres, but they are only rated at 1000 per corner, so i know that won't be enough. Stay tuned.

Like the rig! Thinking about putting pane on my heep. I know you haven't gotten to wheel it much but how much pane do you think it will use? Just wondering how many tanks I should be looking for! Thanks

carwash
09-29-2009, 07:52 PM
should use roughly about the same amount of pane as gasoline, give about 10%. So, i have 16 gallons of pane on board, so about the same as having a 15 gallon gasoline tank... Should be able to do a full day of trail running on that... will fine out in a few weeks for sure.

90CHVYJ
09-30-2009, 10:40 PM

If you want the fancy clear one, call Denver Propane and ask for Duke.

I have seen aluminum ones come across craigslist from time to time.

So.... how much fuel did this heavy turd use in a day of ridin?
did you get a ruff idea

carwash
10-29-2009, 10:27 AM
In two full days, we used a pinch over 2 tanks.

I took my two clears, and 4 aluminum spares. After the first day of riding, the one tank was down to about a gallon or so left. That was about 6 or 7 hours of riding or so. So just for safe measure, we ran up to Harlan propane and had it refilled the next morning(lovely people by the way, 6 teeth between the 3 people and the one girl had 5 of those 6, but very nice).

So started Saturday with 2 fresh full tanks, and went thru about 1.25 of those in a full day of hard, heavy throttle wheeling. I'm happy with this. We covered some serious ground, and turned some serious rpm's. So I can count on roughly a tank for a trail day. I was figuring 2 tanks a day, so the current usage is fine with me.

I'm setting mine up with 5" of up,and cheap poly bump stops, then like you said limit straps,a winch up front and maybe a small one in the back and I'll wait on the sway bar to see if it really needs one.
We have a 6 month old baby girl and momma works nights,so I only get 1 night during the week and then sometimes all weekend to be in the garage. So as soon as I can get back out there and get going on it I'll take some pictures and maybe start a build thread here. Thanks for the help!
