What auto tranny is in my 1989 4wd 1 ton SRW w/454? It seems to be leaking at the output seal. I was unable to locate a data plate on it. I kinda of assumed it was a TH400 but than I was told today that being a 1989 it may not be.
Thanks
Paul

my guess would have been the 400. does it have an overdrive on it? Could be a 700r4 i guess.

If it's a 4 sp. then it's a L480E , 3sp then th400

Or a 4L80E... :D the bigger, beefier brother to the 4L60E in my DD...
I didn't realize that the "80" was that old...

Ok, so now I'm curious... I know that the 4L60E is just an "E" version of the 700R4... Anyone know if there was a predecessor to the 4L80E???

my 90 big block suburban had a 400 in it . I too did not think that a 4L80E was even on the planet in 1989 ????? 700r4 yes ,,,, but not a 4L80 on a Gen II motor. but i have been wrong a couple times in my life . :D
Forget it ... I just reread the post .... I'm the idiot now !!!
The 4L80 E is just a beefed up 4L60E , same case , same valve body just much stronger guts. GM runs them behind the 6.0 and 8.1 gas motors . Mommas Denali has the 80 in it .

Yeah, yeah, this is kinda' nit-picky...but technically the 4L80E is a TH400 with overdrive and electronic controls. It shares very little or no parts with a 4L60E.
The only predecessor to the 4L80E was the TH400. There was no non-"E" (electronic) 4L80 that I am aware of...they went straigt from the 3-speed TH400 to the 4L80E.
I thought the first year of the 4L80E was '91. They were available in that year for the old body styles that were carried over in the 'burb and a few of the heavier duty pickups, but not 100% sure about the new body style trucks.
