thinking about a new build

I found an old military flatty the other day that still runs and drives ( not that the motor matters to me ) and the tub is in really good shape. It has started the gear turning.

I have the following
- TPI 4.3 / 700r4 / 231 just waiting to go into something
- a set of 1/2 ton full size chevy axles
-an extra set a suspension seats
-a couple hundred feet of DOM
-a pile of extra YJ leafs
and prob. a bunch more stuff sitting around that could be put in a nice street/trail rig .

I was thinking something along the lines of this :

thinking that I might drag it home in a few weeks and see what I can get my self into :D

it's not worth it ! the tub is in good shape but not perfect , in fact the whole jeep is in darn good shape but it will never be a candidate for a pro-resto . I would rather do an off road resto-mod to it. will it piss some of the die hard Willies guy off ? yep , but I don't care :D

I've always wanted one for a daily driver. I know it's a kind of self punshiment thing. With a top speed of about 45 MPH. And 0-45 in just over a mile. Heck I currently ride 230cc dirt back 40 miles a day and I love the fact that at 55 it's top speed cars start lining up behind me and all I can think is I'm going the speed limit.

I hate show cars, put it back on the road where it belongs, maintain it and enjoy it.

Yeah ! I think I'm gonna do . I know the guy and he is giving me a more then great price on the jeep. In a week we are heading to the lake for a much needed vacation and then I think I'll start getting everything planned and gathered up.

There is another one floating around on pirate on tons , linked w/air shocks that is tits I just can't find it .... or maybe the above pic is it pre links ????

There is one kind of like the one in the picture that goes to the cruise in in Kettering but it is more of the sand dune runner.

the lead mechanic at the Badlands used to wheel one on tons, rear steer too. he probably still wheels it, used to have some pics... will try to dig one up.

Are your axles and t-case matched (pass side vs drivers side?)

I would not use full size axles I would keep it little narrower like a set if wide track waggy axles. I was collecting parts for this type of build and have a set of J-30 D60 and D44 eight lug axles. You do not want to be to wide on a build like this casue you will be as wide as you are long unless you do a stretch? Even a 60" wide waggy axle is alot on a flatty.


I think you are taking the Sarge thing a little to far this time......nah!:cool:

no the 231 is Drivers Drop . I was at first thinking of putting a 300 in it to correct this but , I'm now thinking I may just run a HP30/8.8 and maybe keep tire size down to 33-34 ..... I know I will change my mind 100 times before I even get started , just wanted to get some input and brainstorm alittle.

Unless you're really planning to beat it, the 30/88 would be fine on 35s, especially on a light little flattie. That's definitely the way I'd go.

It's what I would consider a resto-mod, looks pretty stock with the exception of the tires and winch. It has a 3.8L Buick V-6 with the stock 3-speed trans, t-case, and stock axles with Lock-rights and disc brakes. Also was converted to power steering and has OBA. 2.5" lift springs with 33" bias ply Buckshots. Older 8274 and a cage complete the package.

It's been a work in progress for 10 years but with the exception of the tires and wheels it still looks the same. When he originally built/restored it still had all of the stock drivetrain with the exception of the lockers and used stock steel wheels with old school 30" mud and snows.

Yes, he periodically breaks axles both front and rear but he really know how hard he can push it before they break.

The guy is an excellent driver and gets all he can out of this little thing (his driving skill lets him keep up with much more built rigs). Don't think he wants to go any further in regards to building it as he likes the looks of it, but he originally built it to wheel, not to take to shows. About 1 minute after the above picture he laid it on the side, but by the next ride you couldn't tell.
