I could have swore i made a thread about this Jeep build already, but I have searched for an hour, and came up empty, so here goes.
Picked this rig up from Steve Waters, who got it from Shane I believe.... Was a true basket case when it rolled my way, needing a lot of love.
I was gonna build it for myself to have a streetable/trail jeep, but decided that i really didn't need that, so i sold it to my Mother in Law and her boyfriend Dave. Cool part is that i still get to build it, and that's what i really love, so all is good to go.
Some specs... came to me partially assembled, parts flying off, hanging off, engine on a stand, etc.... Came with a 350 (unknown condition) as well as a tpi350 with Siamese runner and aftermarket throttle body, etc... If you know Uncle Holley, you know the motor. Yes, that one. 60 front, 14 bolt rear, Hummer wheels, 2" spacers all around, tub, grill, tube fenders, some awful seats, and that's about it.
First order of business was compete tear down, and removal of all the stuff that was poorly done. Missed welds, outboarding not wide enough, poor anti wrap fab, etc.... Plans are reversed XJ rear springs, YJ fronts, new shackles, new outbarding blocks, front bumper to widen the outboard mounting area.... blah blah blah, paint it all, put it back together, etc... just another 1 ton jeep build i guess. How bout some pics....
How it came to me...

Thanks Brad, good to know. A lot of my work is done late at night, starting about 9:30. When most people are winding down, I'm cranking it up.
Will probably do some frame reinforcements in some spots tonight. Had some nasty metal below the areas I had to cut off. Plasma took a ****, and the torch is sometimes unkind to surrounding metals. Have to build new outboarding for the new front springs as well, which will mean cutting off the front "bumper" and remaking that, as it isn't wide enough at this point.

i would say since it doesnt look as if the h1 wheels havent been recentered it would be for caliper clearance

Am I seeing things wrong ? what is up with that anti-wrap bar ????
My favorite part is that the anti-wrap bar has a bushing and bolts to some tabs, and its welded to the axle right under the bushing!

11-02-2009, 08:34 PM
yeah, spacers cuz the wheels aren't recentered. They are 2" all around, which often isn't enough, but we will see. Hell I used to run 4" spacers on the back of the pumpkin to clear the coilovers.
No idea what the hell someone was thinking with this anti wrap bar. The bushing is just welded to the crossmember. It's pure awesome. There is that kind of stuff all over this rig.
Heading out shortly to start cutting the mag runflats down... Imma keep this **** for the next campfire... It's no flashbang, but should be some good fireworks i hear.

Tonight's work sucked the balls, and not in the good kind of ball sucking way...
Cut the H1 runflat's off for Dave's wheels. I had some concerns leaving them in, as he is only running 40" tires. That doesn't put much space between that magnesium and the rubber when aired way down. I think a runflat is was cut my tire in Harlan, and I run 44's...
So, used my convertible bandsaw to cut the major part off, then took the 4.5 grinder to them to knock it down the rest of the way, then used a 4.5 flap wheel to take all the sharp edges off.

So, contrary to popular belief, the magnesium does not burst into flames and explode when you cut it. It doesn't catch on fire with the inability to be extinguished, etc. So, just out of curiosity, I took some shavings and made a little pile, and took a lighter to it. Took a second to catch, but then it did burn pretty bright, but burned out rather quickly. I took a bigger chunk and tried to catch it on fire, no luck. So, not as dangerous as people once thought. I did save all the scrap huge chunks and a tin of powder and shavings from teh cutting and grinding. Next hot campfire, I'ma toss the **** in there, see if it will burn. Leads me to believe that they are made from some sort of magnesium alloy and not pure mag... will see if i can find out, just for reference...
This whole process for the 8 half runflats took me about 2 hours. Not too bad i guess. Not looking forward to it, but I have to do it all over again with my own rig in a few days.... ugh.

You see a lot of guys scap'in the run flats and cutting large PVC pipe to use inside the tire for the double bead lock.
FWI - It's the magnesium powder/dust that catches fire quick and burns like fireworks! Just grind down the scrap and toss the "magic" dust in the campfire for you firewoks!

Started my frame repair tonight as well. The areas of swiss cheese will be sleeved with c-channel. I made the channel from rect stock. Found some in my piles and piles of stock that has the right ID to go over the existing OD. Cut the one end off, making a sweet C that will slide down over the frame, once i notch out the areas for the rock sliders and body mounts.

So I have to ask.......what's the story behind this build pattern. The tube work, sliders, 1-ton axles with H1 rims, neon paint, all on a CJ... all seems to be about the same cookie cutter pattern as several others I see on this board. Not knocking it by any means, just curious. I assume the same guy(s) had a hand in all the builds?

They were family friends who built them all around the same time with the help of an out of state builder. Uncle Holly, Steve Waters and Jeff Smith owned them originally. Documentation now states that Jeff Smith still owns his and Steves was sold to Jim Smith. There are 3 of these rare pieces known still to exist and CW is altering history. Some say to leave them stock as it may be worth more original. Others say modify it and make it better. Lets tune in and see what the new color scheme will be!

I recall one time the club being called the Skittles, because of all the neon colors..
Jeff Smith and Steve waters had theirs built by JB's offroad in Indianapolis if i recall correctly. Jeff's was originally blue and yellow and stevers was green and red. Jeff still has his, it is now silver and blue, and yes, steve sold his to Jim Smith, and it's now painted black, green and orange if i recall correctly. (2 different color tube fenders, but you didn't hear that form me!)
This CJ was purchased by Shane originally, and its initial build was at Jeff Smith's shop at his house. They did all the tube work just like was done on his and Steve's. I guess either shane lost interest or ran out of money or something, as I don't think it ever saw the trail. Steve ended up buying it, after regretting the sale of his to Jim... but lost interest as well. He had intentions of putting Uncle Holley's motor in it, so it came with that as well.
The tube work is vintage in my opinion. Was very popular on a ton of rigs nationwide for a while, about 10 years ago-ish, during the time when lean and light was unheard of. It's not my favorite either anymore, but I'm not gonna redo it all... that's for sure. It protects teh tub a bit, and Dave likes it, so it all stays. So to keep Truggy happy and the value of the vintage rig intact, I will leave the tubes unmolested and just reinforce where necessary...
New color scheme will be much more mild... maybe even a black frame and cage... unheard of!

Ok, all frame repair done. Beadblasted, and back to the shop for spring mounting and reassembly, etc.
Plated the corners with some triangles. The P.O. had plated the frame in the rear on the bottom and sides, but it was done with some sort of really wavy metal, so i wanted a nice strong flat surface to mount the shackle hangers to.

It's pretty sweet seeing the springs on it, even if it is upside down. I used the length of string method to know where to place the shackle mount. ie; measure the length of the spring as if it were flat. hold it at the bolt for the spring mount, lengthen if forward past where the spring stops in arched position. Take a look at how much string you have extra, and make sure that the length of the shackle you have can absorb that much length by the shackle swinging forward...
Here's some shots of the springs on... moving right along i guess.

Now, next in line is to get tub painted, frame painted, set tub on frame, build motor mounts, build tcase mounts, reinstall cage, wired it, etc... you know just a few hours work.

Nice!! What's the steering going to look like? You still gonna use those stubby highsteer arms?
Coming together pretty quick, nice job.

those cherokee springs 51" long? 2" lift style?

Stock cherokee springs, no lift.
Using these high steer arms for now, yes. Well, at least one of them. Drag link in stock location, and arm from pitman to high steer.
By the way, looking for a drop pitman arm for a cj... anybody got one?

I'm guessing it's different than the YJ one that I have...
Reinforce the frame like you did for the rust, drill it and weld in bosses for the MJ steering gearbox with YJ drop arm that I have... even easier if it's sitting there with a P-series Saginaw pump. It would be stronger on a few levels... just a thought.

Dunno if they are the same or not, but I can't imagine they are. Anyone?
HD mounts for the CJ box are already purchased, and damn near on the frame already. CJ stuff will be fine I'd say for the 40" tires.

Did a couple more day's work on this, this week. Put tub on for measurements, then pulled it back to drop the drivetrain into it to build mounts...

Used your standard horn/fabset mounts for the motor and tube between the horn and frame. They will be braced with plate vertically, and another tube horizontally, but not until I pull the motor back out.

Hiccup in the mix, one of the 1/2" holes on the 205 adapter was stripped, so drilled and tapped it for 9/16... that was a *****.
With the way these cast adapters are notorious for breaking in aftermarket applications, I wanted to utilize the stock style mounts so that the thing could as much flex as needed as to not break the ears off. Cross your fingers, still trying to figure out a way to utilize a torque type auxiliary mount for it.

Utilized tubing, fabsets, and 1/4" plate to finish up the tcase mount. May still do some more bracing and more protection off of it, but the jury is still out, as this is a serious budget build. What i have now works, and i've already got a half day into it.
Had to make a cutout in one tube for the 205 to drop into. The pig tcase already hangs too low, so i wanted to tuck the xmember up as high as i could.

Rolling this out today to insulate the shop. Not a ton left to do on it. Rear anti-wrap, finish motor mounts, tub install, hood/fenders/grill, radiator, wiring, paint, blah blah, blah... ok still quite a bit.

Braced and burned in the motor mounts today... they should hold. Mounting anti-wrap bar tomorrow, then it gets a little rest again.

Looks good CW... the least favorite part of mine was getting the bushings out of the tacked fab sets...
I have an even greater appreciation for those beautiful welds.
