Is a 8.25 as strong as a Dana 44?

The 29 spline is pretty close.

The 27, not so much.

Chrysler 8.25 (1991-1996)
• 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts
• 8.25" ring gear
• 3.00" axle tube

Chrysler 8.25 (late 1996-2001)
• 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts
• 8.25" ring gear
• 3.00" axle tube

Dana 44 non c-clip
• 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts
• 8.5" ring gear
• 2.75" axle tube

Tony, what is in your XJ now? The 8.25 will bolt in when most Dana 44's won't plus it will cost a lot more. The 8.25 has a lot more aftermarket support now which is nice. I have a 29 spline 8.25.

most Dana 44's won't...

Not sure what you mean by "most 44s" but I assumed he was talking about an XJ 44, which obviously would bolt in.

Pinion's a little longer, but that's all...

Yes thats what I meant Robert, considering $400 is about the going rate for the 87-88sih XJ 44 and you can get a 29 spline C8.25 for $50-&100. Also you could snag a 8.8 with Disc's and a mount kits for around the $400 range or cheaper if you are a shopper.

All good advice.

I've even considered selling my locked and geared 44, doing up a 29spl, and pocketing the difference.

The 44s are over priced anymore. I sure wouldn't buy another.

My first choice Dana 44...They hold their value.:D Have you called around ??With the the cash for clunkers program you may find one cheap ..

The 29 spline C8.25 will work fine too..
