View Full Version : Project JimmyRig almost ready to begin.

plan A ,

I scored a set of 1 ton Dodge axles ( I'm not going to get into the whole ball joint / unit bearing vs. King pin issue , I don't care which is stronger, the axles were free and that means they kick the **** out of a $1200.00 King Pin axle )
This is going to be a very very low budget 1 ton project that I hope to be able to drive to Ky, wheel , and then drive home ...... well maybe not !!!! but you know what I mean ....

1999 GMC Jimmy 2 dr 4x4 ( the little ***** in my avatar ) $600.00 out of pocket , with an under 5k mile 4.3 crate motor.

Going to order a set of 37" military goodyears and hummer beadlocks from 406YJ on Pirate4x4 - $588.00 to my front door for all.

$600.00
+$588.00
__________
$1188.00 + Misc. stuff like steel and u-bolts ( $250.00)

$1438.00

I'm going SOA with stock Jimmy springs in the rear and maybe an extra leaf or two from the pile of springs that I have been hanging on to.

Front will be SOA also , was going to go coils but for a whole bunch of reasons I'm going to stick with leafs up front . going to try stock YJs , but may go with XJ's , pushing the axle foward about 6" and running an Astro van steering box .
Will be running hydro assist , built with tapped box and Surplus Center ram and fix'ns.

I'm stuck on a transfer case at this point , I'm drivers drop so I'm trying to research what will mate to my trans. May go with a 231C

Plan is to get everything gathered up in the next month and knock it out in a long week end and be ready to wheel before summer.

Plan B ,

I have a buddy searching the Co-parts auctions (Walton Ky and Columbus Oh) for a S-10 or Sonoma ext. cab that has been hit in the rear hard ( so it's cheap) or a 4 door S-10 ( I know , I know they are fairly rare ) but the cool factor would be through the roof !
Cut the rear frame off tube it out and dove tail it with the 1 tons and run at least 39.5's .

If I do the Jimmy and then find a truck I can go to the bone yard and grab some Jeep stockers and throw under her in an afternoon run my 32's and keep it a DD.

Stay tuned for the build,,,,, and or buildsssss

...from 406YJ on Pirate4x4...

I've bought some things from him... was a nice experience.

...that has been hit in the rear hard...

For a second, thought you were talking about CW.

Can't wait for this round to begin.... you'll still beat me to the trail...

Moving back on topic " Fags ! " ,

I now have my gears for the 60's and 4 12 bolt Hummer bead locks with 5 37" Goodyears sitting in the garage . Getting ready to order some of brackets and what nots that I don't feel like wasting time DIYing. The build may start rolling this week end ... :beers:

here's a treaser , I think it will be alot taller then this but the floor jack is only so tall :D

Looking good! What will the wheelbase be? Making it streetable or offroad only?

sarge
04-12-2010, 04:19 PM
Don't have a clue what the wheel base will end up at , will find out when everything clears.
Plan is to keep it streetable , thats why I'm going with Radial 37's

It will be locked in the rear and I'm still debating on locking the front.

Prolly have to recenter the H1's and I'm def. looking at rock rings

Once I get the axles under her I'm gonna build front and rear bumpers, rocker protection and a nice flat belly.

I have several different sets of leafs I'm going to be trying but I will probably end up with Dakota leafs in the front stockers in the rear with a possible extra leaf or two.

I would find dodge ram front dually wheel spacers but you may not need them if you keep things out of the way. 3.5" spacers one each side will put you at about 92" with those rims.

Getting off to a slow start , gotta get the honey do list done for spring and then I hope to really get moving . Yesterday I got the axles all cleaned up stripped and ready for new brackets . I do not know what I did with out a plasma cutter ....... zipped everything right off the axles and then hit'em with the grinder and done !!!!! sure beats a cut off wheel ....

In all seriousness, I want to find one to fall gently out of a truck into my garage. If that actually happens, look out for me to win the lottery, too.

Good start, it will be nice to wheel in hardtop comfort when it is winter.

Looking at the picture again, if you trim right, make good radius cuts, and build some custom bumpers; it will look good as it should perform.

What is your plans on locking the rear? I know your wanting to build on a budget as I am myself. I don't want to weld but I can't seem to find a spool for the rear.

Also, what are the plans for the CAD? Vaccum sucks, you installing the cable kit or is there a home remedy for this? I have mine slid over in place but I don't like the front shaft spinning all the time or removing the box to release it. Thinking there has to be another way.

I used a switch to control the air flow and shift fork to engage and disengage the axle up front.

Used existing vaccum from motor. I do not remember which exact line I used but it is achievable with a little time.

OK gonna answer a few of the questions , as I have been busy gathering the final parts for the past few days .... first off I need an Astro Van steering box from a 2wd van , anyone got one ?

The rear is a 60

Yes the front is CAD . not worried !;)

I'm going to run a cable from AW direct , just like I had in the wrangler $43.00 and forget it .

I'm welding the rear spiders

The transfer case is going to remain the factory 236GM unit for now. This will at least keep the build a little shorter and cheaper for now . Waiting for a 231C to roll into the yard and thinking of doing a 231/231 Doubler ??????

http://www.awdirect.com/easy-glide-pto-cable-6-single-gear/pto/

Ok the price went up a little bit since I did the wrangler .

unbolt the selector fork assy.( CAD ) on the axle , make sure to unplug vac. and electric lines and put the assy. on the work bench.

Pry open the vac. canister that the vac. line plug into and cut out the bladder and then plug the vac. line ports. put vac. canister back together.

find a good spot on the driver side of the CAD housing and drill a hole through the aluminum housing to the inside making sure you can continue to drill into the CAD fork asstraight as possible and as close to the Forks slide shaft. Make hole just big enough for the threaded end of the PTO cable to go through. Now counter sink the outside hole to the size of the outer cable.

Find a good spot on the inside of the rig to mount the pull handle , make sure you pick a spot that can handle a good tug with out bending or breaking .

Route you cable through the fire wall and down to the CAD unit with the least tight bends as possible.

Put a dab of RTV on the hole in the CAD housing and run the cable through and into the fork, bolt the cable to the fork using lock tight. bolt CAD housing back to axle.

When you get the cable you get a cable clamp and nut and bolt. I welded the bolt to the axle tube so I could clamp the cable on on the back side of the axle tube out of harms way and straight in line with were the cable enters the CAD housing .

This is the readers digest version and with out any pictures , but the info is out there if you search a little. I have not found a good write up using this cable.

I had the cheaper PTO/ Throttle cable however I could not keep the cable from pulling out of the fork after about a day of wheeling. It became a real pain in the arse ...... the extra few buck for the threaded end sealed cable was well worth it and I never had a problem with mine once I switched.

Is this the style that bolts on the inside or outside of the frame? I have a GM box from a van that bolts to the outside of the frame identical to a fullsize 80's era truck, but has opposite gearing. I know it's from a van but not sure if it's an Astro for fullsize. (I bought this from a junkyard already off the vehicle not realizing it was a van).

the shift assembly on the axle goes bad alot less often than people believe it does ;)

The Astro box bolts to the inside of the frame just like the Jeep and many other smaller SUV's theonly difference is the pitman arm throw is opposite. Since I'm moving the front axle forward this will help line things up. Thanks anyway . I'm sure one will find it's way into the lot before to long.

I have two major problems

First problem : I have to run at least 2" spacers or have my rims recentered to clear the knuckles and have enough room for my tie rod and drag link.

Second : my pitman arm is going to hit the Diff , it is only about an inch above it sitting in the garage. Going to have to get an Astro van box before i can even drive it .

Also going to play with the springs alittle , not happy with the front location .

Still have to :

Drive shafts
brakes
exhaust
flat belly
shocks
bumpers
..............

ok back on track , got an Astro van gear box today and ordered a set of Copperhead Fab H1 centers. Figured I would just recenter the rims instead of searching for spacers.
I still haven't got my DIY4X stuff  and the centers will not be here until the end of next week ..... I guess this gives me time to get a bunch of the small things taken care of like brakes and drive shafts and spring mounts.
After sitting in the garage pondering what I needed to do I have decided to add a leaf or two all the way around and give me a little room for tires and may not have to trim as much.

Everything I get from Kurt has been top notch, and quick... sorry to hear of your frustration... DIY4X is usually a great resource...

Completely agree with recentering... Copperhead would not be my first choice for centers... let us know what you think of them.

Lets just say j hooks are the same as u-bolts.

Sorry Sarge had to drop a hint.

sarge
05-16-2010, 08:55 PM
OK . I could not find the correct u-bolts for the rear at any local stores and it was to late to drive to a spring shop . I had to get the Jimmy out of the garage so my mom and dad could have a garage sale during the Great Trenton garage sale week end . I ended up cutting a set of used u-bolts in half and welded some pieces of all thread to the now J- bolts . I used two side and cranked them down tight ........ I thought :D I backed out of the garage very very carefully and got to the end of the driveway and BANG !

The rear didn't come completely out from under the rig but almost . The big problem was it happened about 1:30 in the morning and all the neighbors had their windows open. It took till around 2:30 to get the rear end back in place

So it sits beside the house with ratchet straps holding the rear in .

I will be using a tow truck to get it back in the garage tomorrow :D ,

I called Copperhead Sat. morning and got the " oh your parts are in the mail " line of BS. so we'll see how much longer I will have to wait .

Going to drive down to Brieghton(SP?) Spring when I get off work tomorrow and get u-bolts ... I hope .

it has new rotors , calipers and wheel bearing ....... but the Axle it broke in half .... no **** !!!! it was in a 1 ton cummins truck that hit a culvet and snapped the passenger side axle tube off right at the pumpkin and bent the inner axle shaft to about a 45* angle.

The rest of the axle is great ! So now I have a bunch of spare parts......

Anyway I have to put up a drive way mall crawler pic , sorry it's a crappy cell pic.

yeah ! I just can't seem to go anywhere with out the Trenton poe poe finding me !!!

My plan is to run the 37's this year and then step up to at least 38.5's next spring .

Shooting for woods test this week end , got front end parts switched out today still have to play with a few adjustments , test drive tonight was better but not good enough .....

I believe you are heading to your local spot?

Are those 37's 16.5's?

What you still need to fix on the drive?

Yes they are 16.5's with hummer H1's recentered w/ 3" BS .

Things that have to be done before it wheels :

Front drive shaft

Exhaust run

Cross member clearanced

Going to take some angles off a stock Dodge truck today and then compare it to mine . I think I have to much pinion angle and it is causing my problems.

No bump steer at all , just all over the road and hard to control at any speed .

Things that will get done later as time will allow:

Front and rear bumpers

Rock rails

lights- auxillary and rock

flat belly skid

Yeah, Sarge if you have too much pinion angle more than likely your caster is too high causing it to be all over the road.

yep , I went down and took some reference notes from one of the City's stock Dodge trucks and on the flat top of the knuckle it's 5* to the rear. I know with out even going home and checking that mine is going to be way off . It will be no big deal as I only tacked the spring perches on . Hopefully I can get it close with out having to turn the knuckles .

Got the front bumper on it last night , I think it turned out cool ( and from the looks it got last night , so does the general public) .
Also got the exhuast moved out of the way and welded on the new Thrush welded muffler ..... Flowmaster copy for $40.00 at Advance . I think they sound better then a Flow and you can't beat the price.
Drive shaft and skid is up today after work.
