Alright my dad bought a rock buggy from a friend of our and Ive never seen the axle shafts he pulled out. from the looks of the diff cover its a dana60 but the axleshafts in it are 16 spline. Ive never seen anthing like it. But we cant find a replacement for the broke one, we were told it is from an early for 3/4ton.
So if anyonr has one or knows of one around here please let me know.
:beers:

Google is your friend. I did not dig in to it but it looks like you are right as the are early Ford versions.

It's a pre '75 Dana 60. They are 16 spline. You can change the carrier or go to a locker to make it 30 spline, the axle shafts are the same 1.31 dia. and the gear spacing did not change on the carrier. You can try and find a junk yard pre '75 Ford D60 and pull the shafts, or Moser and some other suppliers make custom shafts to fit anything, I think Moser wants about $375 a set for the cutom D60 shafts. Best bet would be to replace the axle or at least the guts with 30 spline stuff.

closed knuckle?

It should be an old F250 rear axle. But the pre '75 F250 were D44 closed knuckle fronts I believe.

Just like mentioned above it's simply an older Ford D60 (assuming rear axle). Depending on what type of diff it has you might be able to just swap out the side gears for 30-spline versions. The 30-spline shafts are the same diameter and slightly stronger at the splines....and much easier to find either in the junkyard or aftermarket.

Thanks for all the input. its already got 5.13 gears and my dad doesnt really wannna redo all that cuz its to damn expensive :) . so ill throw the 31spline axle idea at him, cuz 16 spline is a little ridiculous.

Ill try to get some pictures of it on here soon.

The gears never changed. You should be able to swap spider gears, or go to a locker for 30 spline, or 35 if it fits your fancy.

Yep, depending on what diff/carrier it has you can probably just swap side gears to 30-spline. I really don't think 16-splines are horrible as 78 Buford ran these in a 7k lb. fullsize truck with a 460 and 38" tires for a couple of years and never broke them......not saying they are bulletproof and maybe he was lucky, but they obviously don't snap like twigs either.

However I also worry that likely the shafts are 30+ years old and everything has a fatigue life, the more they are use the less it takes to break them.

Yeah they arent terrible axles. We know the guy that owned it. His name is hillbilly and he beat the hell out of it and only broke one axle after many years.

All you have to change is the carrier. You can reuse the gears you have now. Find a donor truck at a junk yard and you are set.:beers:
