If I can find a place to work on my junk and swap my D300 front outputs and build some quick twin stick shifters I may be able to make it if it is the October 23 weekend... hopefully that is enough time after moving to bug the wife about more Jeep stuff:D

KargoMaster
08-31-2010, 11:42 AM
tell me more of this d300 output swap... are you going 32 spl for the front (cuz that will require some machining) or just replacing stock bits... (If that is the case I have an extra stock front output if you need it...)

I know now that I will not be going on this one... (fawk drama) so I would be happy to help if I can...

flatlander757
08-31-2010, 08:30 PM
I have another stock D300 case that I need to swap the front outputs... I was stupid and hacked off BOTH of the shifter ears early on the build... at the time I was pretty dead-set on either cable shifters or air-actuated shifters... not I'm more a fan of keeping as much crap simple as possible.

Though I don't -need- it from you, I'll gladly throw some money or beer at you for it... I'd like to have an extra so I can get it machined for whenever I DO decide to go 32spline.

I'm probably going to eventually go to Toyota joints and 32 splines for my front shaft whenever I grenade the 1310 axleshaft/square tube abortion of a driveshaft I made... It takes a beating but I replace the joints for getting loose every time or two out... I guess a 4500ish lb jeep sitting on the front shaft and on the rev limiter will do that that:evilgrin:

Ok peeps. Are you serious about this? And when are we interested in it happening? October or November ? I'm wondering about Nov 6th...Too cold?

gothodgie
09-02-2010, 03:53 PM
i think the Nov date would be good. There seems to be a few things going in Oct that we would have to work around. I don't think it would be to cold in early Nov, unless we go straight from summer into winter. Which we all know here in good ole Cincinnati could happen.

I'll be up for it when ever we decided to do it.

it was a combo , computer was frag'd and the fuel spider . What we think was the computer took a crap and slammed #3 so hard it stuck and caused a dead hole ...... went to the dealer with 3 cylinders and came home with five ...... put a new spider in it and it runs great . spent all day in the garage today and got all the loose ends buttoned up and I'm ready .....

T-bird

I would really like to tag along on this ride, but not as built as most. I think a Friday, Saturday and Sunday run would be fun. The Friday run could be a optional night run, because a lot of people would be getting in at different times.

Are there going to be general guidelines on how built your rig should be. I would kill the road section in my DD TJ, but would need a bypass on the harder stuff off road.

tjjeepjeep
09-10-2010, 12:53 PM
Initially getting a level of interest but seems like that is there. So now we're working on the specific details (who, what, where, when) but definitely plan on making it feasible for all levels of vehicles (my rig isn't locked).

How about CORE Almostimate Adventure ? :) (Thinking Tshirts and stickers)

After seeing the pictures and videos of the Big Rock ride over Labor Day , I am in for that part of the adventure. I may be limited to a single day, but hope to be part of this. The weekend of Nov. 5-7 was once mentioned. Is that still a go?

Even if I can do Haspin and the Big Rock, I WILL trailer the 3A between sites. My 3A does not have a cruising gear. 35 mph is about my cruising max.

This gives me a date to build some rock sliders by. Deadlines can be good.

...How about CORE Almostimate Adventure ? :)

Do you really want to be able to abbreviate this subgroup within our community ---> AA? Dunno, maybe that was on purpose??

I dig the CORE UA concept... As a group, we're clearly higher on the trailering quotient than many... and for a variety of reasons (thanks for chiming in John... I can't get enough of that CJ-3a).

Completion of the CORE UA should be simple, run what you brung, fix what you break, no trailers, drive the whole thing... HOWEVER, exclusion of all others has never been our thing... if folks want to join in based on an approximate schedule (clearly subject to change) then I say that they are as welcomed to join in to enjoy some wheeling as any other trip...

Maybe we just hold the t-shirts/stickers for the finish line??

Just some thoughts to continue the conversation... :beers:

We are kinda like a 7 step program (some of us more than others)...I chuckled when I saw it. Hoped it would generate ideas...still waiting.

I honestly didn't know much about UA til Pater mentioned the idea and we started getting interest. I don't believe we're looking at an event that lays 100% to those rules which is why I tried a play on words to allow us the ability to deviate as we need to make it our own. As well as how competitive we're really gonna make this.

I have some ideas and have been working a few angles. But most is up in the air, so anyone interested in this thing feel free to attend our meeting Monday as we will decide a bunch of things regarding this at that time.

Sharing one angle: working on getting us onto some private land for the Saturday run so it's a unique experience ...

Years ago the group i ran around with used to do something like this.

We would meet in a campground Berea (i think) and camp on friday night then pack up Saturday morning and run the trails and few road miles mixed in and go to Livingston on saturday, camp(usually at night run too) and then wheel a little Sunday at Livingston. We did this for 3 or 4 years in a row in the mid 90's, but i think most of those trails are closed now.

Was always a good time... Maybe something similar to this might work...

Well, local wheeling doesn't get much more "local" than 491.

Although, for you guys, White Cross in Oxford might be closer:

Edit:
Lauel IN to Oxford OH: 30 miles and 50 minutes.
Oxford OH to DeMossville KY: 64 miles and an hour-twenty.
Demossville to Maysville: 51 miles, another hour-twenty.

How strict is Big Rock on having a full-size spare?

I have freaking 40s on a Jeep... I'm not got any room for carrying a flippin' spare. I've got a ton of tire plugs though:evilgrin:

From the looks of it most all of those parks are nothing but mud(not too fond of it)... what the hell are you going to cut a tire on:evilgrin:

Well, they do sell carriers...

I don't think Duke would give you a hard time, and I don't know if CORE has a hard and fast rule about it.

But personally, I'm a pretty big fan of going prepared. I (and most others) carry spare axleshafts, driveshafts, ujoints, unibearings, fluids, sensors, etc etc. I'd feel plain naked without a spare tire.

You never expect the worst, but just how would you drag it out of the woods on three tires? And I think you said you sold the tow rig before the move, how would you then drag it home?

Your call, I guess, but I like a little more insurance.

Yeah, I carry all the spare fluids and about 300lbs of tools and crap when I wheel...

They DO sell carriers but the plan for me is to get a house, then get another tow-rig, then get a spare tire and keep that on the tow rig.

These tires are thick as hell too... they're not like BFG A/Ts or something.

I PMed "BigRock" on here about the rule... if I'm not allowed it's no big deal, I definitely understand.

As for dragging home... I have $900 of towing coverage through my insurance company... as long as I can drag it to the road I'm fine :)

jwend

I have no spare and wheel there.... as long as you can get your rig out before dark and Duke doesnt have to deal with it you should be cool. he doesnt like check you to see if you brought one, rules at local off road parks are more guide lines than rules...... at least from my experiance, dont act like a ass and you wont get treated as one.

Honestly, you may be a little bored in your rig at 491. A lot of it is pretty mild. I have to look for (ie: make up) stuff to challenge mine on 35s.

Yes, they are trailer-capable now, though the lot isn't especially trailer-friendly.

It's all dirt and loose gravel, and just inclined enough to give some two-wheel-drive tow rigs trouble.

Know there's a lot of interest around this, so wanted to give you a quick update
from the meeting last night. Definitely moving forward with this. We are still
working out some details but we were able to get to a few decisions. Keeping in
mind this is our first year (hoping this becomes a repeat thing) and we can
grow/learn from this years. Wanted to keep travel to a minimum this year to
see how it all goes. Enough chatter:

Two day event - Sat 11/6 and Sun 11/7
Schedule overview:
Sat at Haspin Acres.
Sat eve: Travel to Big Rock Offroad Park
Dinner / Camping there
Run all day Sunday at Big Rock

Few notable rules/decisions for Event Participant:
no alcohol on trails
trailer rigs allowed
camping on site Sat night (no hotels)
attendance reqd both days/parks

Things we're working on and/or thinking about out loud:
Vehicle requirements (relax it'll be pretty basic, remember I wheel Macy's)
Participant registration to net you an event Tshirt and sticker (single day
participants wouldn't be eligible for this)
Grill out at Big Rock for everyone (maybe grill/meat item as part of
registration cost and everyone else bring other things?)
Still kinda need a name since Ultimate Adventure has assumptions built into it
(like no trailers)
Maybe a prize for worst break or best run either over both days or one per each
day? Could be tricky if we have multiple groups?

Like I said, still ironing out details....

I am having the same questions myself. Its not as stressful knowing you need to drive it somewhere after you are done beating on your junk. Who knows. I have "camped" in my truck many a time though. I have scheduled my time off. I really really hope it works out.

Off topic-I havent wheeled with Core in about 5 years. Any of the people that have been around a while, remember the Nissan truck I brought to the Bridge? I think that was my last Core trip.

My worry is haspin. If I break at the Rock, I wouldn't hesitate to go home for the trailer and come back for it.

Haspin, I don't know how much would still be there to come back FOR.

Wow, yes. I believe after the second of third tow back to camp we told you to stay within sight of camp... and we had an interesting fire pit that evening with the pallets that you brought and "misc" items that ended up with them... I seem to remember a gentleman by the name of Squirrel... 'nuff said.

Still wondering about an event name. Seems like there is a lot potentially taken for granted if we use the term "Ultimate Adventure". How about something like "ADVENTURE CORE". Kind of a play on words but we can expand it to wherever it needs to go.. Thoughts???

Hmm CORE Carnage Adventure... That kinda works actually. Don't want to limit ourselves to a weekend (I have big ideas) in case we do more days in either a spring or fall run next year.

Are people interested in paying for Tshirts and/or stickers for the event? I'm trying to get an estimated cost for them. Pretty basic designs and you have to run Haspin Sat, camp overnight and run Big Rock Sun in order to receive them.

Sat evening/night I was thinking of a big grill out party thing at Big Rock. Not sure on logistics (is the meat item part of the registration packet w/Tshirt and sticker or do people bring stuff...oh and grills (not the dental kind) ).

why not CUA? Core Ultimate Adventure?

Ultimate Adventure infers certain things/rules that we're not going to (read: no trailers). Need to follow the KISS principle. I do still like CORE AA (can have so much fun with that acroynm).

Getting info from parks now to see what the 'final' rules/regs/info will be.
