Wow I cant wait for next month. Seems like a lot of very good competition this year.
Just curious but why no Dana 70s? Is it just a better move to go from tons to Rocks?

A D70 is a 1 ton. I've seen many Jeeps with D70's but i've seen even more rigs with 14bolts. A D60 rear is really a 3/4 ton.
I guess not as much aftermarket for the D70 though. Limited locker and gear selection maybe? I've got a D80 under my dually and it's freakin' huge. I would say the rocks may have better clearance underneath.
:beers:

Limited selection of aftermarket parts for the 70. 70 vs. 2.5 Rock is really no comparison. You can't build a 60 or 14b or 70 (no matter how much money you throw at it) to hold up to what a 2.5 can take. 10-15 years ago, anyone running a 60 got made fun of. "Who needs an axle that big, you're retarded."

I thought that Big Ed (truck alt) had one... ahh yes... 70HD
Heck, even 12voltguy's Bronco has a 14 bolt...
I think that the different flavors of Dana70's also have some folks staying away from the 70 for fear of getting the wrong one??
You want an axle... Dana 80... that's an AXLE. 10 lug 11,000 weight rated one is a 1.25 ton axle... I have a WHOLE new appreciation for Morris's Buggy from a few years ago... Dana 80 center and Rockwell outters... Would love to see that one again... He was at the Sunfire Offroad booth a few years ago for the benefit IIRC... anyone know if that one is still around??

I'm running a D70. It has performed great but lockers are too expensive. It's welded now and I'm happy,....so far.

A Dana70 and 14-bolt FF are pretty comparable in regards to strength. About the only advantage is that some D70 models offer the option of really low gears (5.38 is lowest in 14FF). Front D70's are pretty rare and the only strength increase is the larger ring and pinion. Most/all did come stock with 35-spline stubs but that is a pretty easy upgrade to a D60. So the axleshafts are the same between a D60 and D70 (or at least a D60 is easily upgraded to be equal) and I just don't hear too many people breaking R&P's on a D60.

he had his new buggy down at gravelrama this year on sunday and all i can say is WOW. i know i will be accused of ridding his nuts but this thing now has 900hp and over 800tq and has been 120mph in the desert with 49"tires on it. it looks to have the same axle set up as the old buggy did. anyway its sharp.

Not sure if this means that he's built a new buggy and stole the axles from the old one, or if this is still the TTC buggy just rebuilt?? Either way... I would love to see those Dana80 center/Rockwell outer axles that he had in that thing... some serious time and custom parts to get those right...
Speaking of FourWheeler and TTC... don't forget that Monday at 8:00pm on the Outdoor channel (and HD) will be the first glimpse of TTC 2010 footage....

I still say that Roger's "Elmo" Power Wagon is the only vehicle that I've ever seen that makes 49" Iroks look like they belong...

i like the buggy. but i dont think bigger is better on a ultra 4 style rig.

It is a bit large IMO... 49's at 120 mph, no thanks, only if they were on a 24" wheel or larger. It's a sharp looking rig. And yes, the lights seem a bit ridiculous.

whats wrong with hairy women??? as long as they dont have an adam's apple bigger than mine......
yeah, seeing how a lot of koh guys are running off the shelf RADIAL tires to make high speed tolerable, i wouldent look forward to 49's at all in the desert.
i wish i got the outdoor channel. guess im stuck with extreme 4x4 showing me how to get better gas milage from a 98 ram....

I've got a D70HD under the back of my TJ.
Some other info on D70s:
The D70HD uses larger carrier bearings and has 4" dia axle tubes.
The D70U has a SMOOTH bottom... very nice.
Uses the same D60 pinion yokes... interchangability is nice. since you've likely got a 60 in the front(like I do).
Deeper gears available(down to 7.17) as already mentioned... I LOVE my 5.86s with stock 4.0:cool:
Not sure about 14 bolts, but most D70s have equal length axle shafts left and right... less spares.
The housing is cast steel... very easy to weld vs the 14 bolt's cast IRON center section.
1.5" diameter shafts... mine are 35 spline. There are some oddball coarse splined axles out there too but 35 spline is relatively common AFAIK.
Carriers... kinda expensive for this axle but SOME of the D70 carriers are 2pc carriers... in which case the Detroit upgrade is actually relatively cheap IIRC. Some have 1pc carriers and you need to buy a full Detroit then as well.
Another thing on gears... there is NO 5.38 gear ratio available for any D70... so if you have a D60 for the front or something already geared to 5.38s... you're better off just getting a 14 bolt instead. Similar strength but you won't be re-regearing your front axle. I found this out when the previous owner told me it had 5.38 gears... I was very happy about that... then found out that 5.38s don't exist... inspection found I have 5.86s which work really well on 40s. Tons of power and it's not too terrible shifting all the time.
:beers:

Less spares to carry would certainly be nice... 14 bolts are most certainly not the same length axle shafts... but the ARE just close enough to be a pain in the a$$.
I'm betting that the D70 is probably like the wonky numbers in the D80... 4.63:1 and 5.13:1 were very "common" for the Chevy Dana80 in my OBS 3500HD...

Right or wrong, it is what my DVR is set for.

Agreed, we could have made a better show... but it also could have been our downfall if we got DQ'ed for bouncing up and over one of the side markers, or if it got UGLY in the logs...
The same higher COG that we used to our advantage to kill the Mini Rubicon and Tank Trap would have done us NO GOOD if we tilted over to one side as far as Leo was.
I'm quite pleased with the overall result, and with as little room for error as there was... I'm happy with our Frame Twister run.
I believe the days of going into the Tank Trap with a lead big enough to win the thing no matter what... are long gone. Too many good rigs out there.

And you will always have me to blame fir not letting you pre spool more rope. I could kick myself for that one. That makes two times I didn't listen to my co driver. In The tank trap it might have got us below 3 minutes.
If the frame twister had been later in the week I would skipped us across it like a rock.
