I saw Fat Girl was DQed from Tank Trap for a rules infraction. What was that all about.

JeffK5

An off camera incident the day before at the Mini Rubicon .... they DQ'd him from the TankTrap to insure he had no chance at winning the overall...

He ran the trap knowing it was jut for fun and did many thousands of dollars damage to his rig ..trashed a ZZ502 and killed the $$ race trans.

There was a big thing about it on facebook for a while. From what I understand, they were with some folks that were drinking and the judges found out about it.

I'm pretty sure it was when it belonged to Tim Cameron.

I heard at the park in Hollister that no drinking is allowed in the off road park, it's allowed at the camp ground. Fatgirl's driver had a couple after his runs were done but in the offroad park. So officails heard of it and DQed him. He wasn' going to drive his rig back to the camp, says his people. Thats what I heard.

...also, if his run had counted, howed he do? would that have changed the results significant.?

His run in the Tank Trap was respectable... sub-10 min. (even with the roll-onto-the-side winching) but it was the 10th place in the Mud Pit did not do him any favors overall... Even without ANY points from the 'Trap, he got 5th highest number of points. With points that he potentially could have won in the 'Trap... would have been up to 3rd at best.

Put a snorkel on Fat Girl before the Mud... and it's a WHOLE different story.

Yea I bet he destroyed it with no snorkel

Nice work on the Mini Rubicon Mike, sub one minute and made it look easy.

FatGirl really struggled in there. And the other teams that are west coast and should have rock experience didn't come close to your time. Did it help going thru first since it looked liek a lot of the rocks were able to be moved and possibly you and the other guys moved them to harder spots?

Don't be fooled by their editing trickery... I didn't go first. I went 4th I think... Guam, Leo, and Ryan went before me. Maybe they paved the way for me... that's what they all say anyway.

RuffedUpXJ

If anything Leo messed the course up. Those were some big holes in there.

KargoMaster
10-26-2010, 01:38 PM
Yes we went 4th... editing trickery...

PJ in the Willy's was directly behind us...and he had a 4 min time... I thought that was an indication of CW's driving skill rather than the "highway" that some were claiming... we went over many of the same rocks... we just didn't get caught up on them.

Side note: I think I said two words that whole time. "My side..." once.

I thought that it was great that CW and Roger (who seemed to really enjoy that run) represented this side of the country well.

I can't believe the way that Sami guy dragged his rig down and broke the links, shocks, and whatever else was in the way. Too much money to get another 100 feet, but I do understand it's a once in a lifetime event.

Are you allowed to do it more than once?

I definitely have to admit being impressed with Carwash's performance in TTC based on the fact there didn't seem to be much of a shakedown on the rig and he didn't have much seat time in it prior to the event. j

Hell, had ZERO seat time on the rear steer, and can't imagine not having it in another rig ever again.

The few good runs I had on the rig before TTC was plenty as far as getting used to the rig. Not like i built something bizarre and weird that needed getting used to, was just a fat pig.

Hell, had ZERO seat time on the rear steer...

Ha, we finished the "return to center" electrical part of the rear steer while we were out there on Sunday... with a wiring diagram that was wrong (had too much information, but we guessed right:D).

There were times that we would've never touched the rear though... Seeing Viz turning Leo's rear wheels on the Hill Climb surprised me...

I can't believe the way that Sami guy dragged his rig down and broke the links, shocks, and whatever else was in the way. Too much money to get another 100 feet...

Agreed, and the worst part was that we all tried to tell Ryan and Mindi, but we got "shushed" by the judges... At one point I saw myself in the video with my head in my hands and I remember quite clearly that feeling of impending needless destruction, not my favorite part of TTC.

In the end... he would have only lost ONE point if he'd stopped... Not enough to change the final standings in any way. (but you don't know that at the time!)

Are you allowed to do it more than once?

My understanding is Driver only once per vehicle, Co-Driver all you want...
Doug Kahlstrom was a Driver last year (red Dodge) and was PJ's Co-driver this year in the Willys Buggy. I don't think that anyone has ever returned with a different rig as a Driver again, but the possibility exists if voted in by the readers.

We pretty much ran the same thing (5.5 lbs? x 4) in everything except the Tow test... We increased the rears more than 200%, but in hindsight... 12 lbs. wasn't enough.

If MT rumors are true, the T5 compound and sidebiter design should be out in a "smaller" size (mid-lower 40's) maybe next year... I certainly hope that is true... Those are some NICE all around tires.

I have a feeling that if they made a 16.5 version they would have trouble keeping stock... :D

Pretty sure it's unlimited in regards to the co-driver. I remember a guy from Pirate4x4 driving one year and being the co-driver at least 2 times in different years (once was for a buddy, the other for his wife).

OK Brad, so i know I have only seen you with a floppy-ish hat on but it seems that all the TV people and old competitors had them on. Are those hats big out there?

KargoMaster
10-28-2010, 04:35 PM
May have been around 2005 or so where there was an official hat for the event... Blue bucket hat... floppy brim type... I believe they may have even coerced competitors into wearing them during the pics/events...

Some of the Judges and Crew were still wearing them in past videos (Stover)... and we saw some this time... but the style hat is something that works well to keep off the brutal sun. When we got to JV after TTC... the environment was extremely hostile in terms of sun/dry-ness.

I'm still less than happy that they wouldn't let me wear my hat for the rig/driver/co-dog beauty shots on Monday... After that I put on the AMSOIL sticker and no one said another word... Lynn (AMSOIL rep) even said that he was getting people asking him about my hat...

That hat is Outdoor Research's Seattle Sombrero and mine has been rafting through the Grand Canyon, water skiing/wakeboarding/snow skiing/snow boarding numerous times, wheeling (back when I had a rig to drive), and has kept the rain off the back of my neck (my original intention) countless times in the last decade... I think it's time for a new one... maybe a different color this time?

RuffedUpXJ
10-28-2010, 04:52 PM
I have a camo one I wear as well and I understand the heat and what not and I guess that explains having one being the "hat" for the event makes them popular.

It was funny watching the camera guys trying to walk along the tank trap when you guys went through it since they couldn't keep up.

How close did the points end up being? I haven't found them and FourWheeler's site sucks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bOBVJQVs4o&NR=1

Here's my take on the "results" ...there's 3 possibilities:

Official:
1. Carwash Buggy = 67
2. Guam Buggy = 66
3. Willys Buggy = 46
4. Zuk Buggy = 45
5. Gray Truck = 41 (Truck Class Winner)
6. Roger's PowerWagon = 40
7. Danger Ranger = 32
8. '37 Ford = 31
9. 12voltGuy = 25

Unofficial: (+FatGirl earned points before 'Trap)
1. Carwash Buggy = 67
2. Guam Buggy = 66
3. Willys Buggy = 46
4. Zuk Buggy = 45
5. FatGirl Buggy = 43
6. Gray Truck = 41
7. Roger's PowerWagon = 40
8. Danger Ranger = 32
9. '37 Ford = 31
10. 12voltGuy = 25

Unofficial Buggy Class: (+FatGirl points in the 'Trap)
1. Carwash Buggy = 67
2. Guam Buggy = 66
3. FatGirl Buggy = 53 (estimated based on Leo/Viz time through 'Trap)
4. Willys Buggy = 46
5. Zuk Buggy = 45

Not sure that the "Truck Class" Equal Opportunity bracket is really a good idea as it was really 5th or 6th place overall... but we'll see what happens...

RuffedUpXJ

Well the truck class is cool for people that don't have a money for a full tube chassis.

The obstacle course seemed to kill everyones tie rod ends on the drop off. That would suck.

blazerbrad
10-29-2010, 08:58 AM
It's nice to know that even if Fat Girl would have won the Tank Trap, Carwash would have still won the event.

Fat Girl = 43 going into tank trap, then +20 if they won = 63
Carwash = second place in tank trap would have dropped him 2 points = 65

I understand the concept of the truck class regarding not being able to afford a full blown tube buggy......but do you really think any of the "trucks" in that class have substantially less money or time in them? I'm sure there were buggies there that did cost more and require more time, but point being you could build a decent buggy for the time and cost.

Do you think it would be better if it was more like UROC and WEROCK with tire sized classes?

I do get the whole advance the wheeling world with engineering and tech. and I understand that part of TTC.

KargoMaster
10-29-2010, 01:19 PM
I guess there were only two Mickey Thompson Classes this year... 46" and 54" (side note: I bet last year's loss to ag tires chapped MT's ass, because ALL competitors got MT tires this year...) If I chop up the results by Tire Size:

1. 54 Carwash Buggy = 67
2. 54 Guam Buggy = 66
3. 54 Willys Buggy = 46
4. 54 Zuk Buggy = 45
6. 54 Roger's PowerWagon = 40
7. 54 Danger Ranger = 32

4a. 46 FatGirl = 43 (DQ)
5. 46 Gray Truck = 41 (Truck Class Winner)
8. 46 '37 Ford = 31
9. 46 12voltGuy = 25

I don't know that would be any better or worse... but to give a person competing a reason to not "just go bigger" at this point doesn't look like a bad thing. But then you get back to Buggies and Trucks in same class...

It's a tough call, I guess that's why they went Truck Affirmative Action this year.

I've had some time to ponder the possibilities... yes. Worst part for me was the dreams during and just after the comp... I'm glad those are over. Let's just say that my mind was very focused on the competition.

...i didn't know that about the ag tires last year- did he just not want m/t's, or did the kubota dealer sponsor him or...? or is running m/t's gonna be mandatory next to even the feild out?
...

Dave "ROAD KILL 5.9" on Pirate was last years winner (over Brett Jerome by 1 point)... I think he just liked his setup the way it was... worked out well for him I think.. I can't imagine forcing MT's on everyone... That would be counter-productive and stupid. This years alternates had 44 Boggers and 54 Boggers...

...my favorite irony is tuff country as a sponsor.

Yes, that's almost as ironic as a Rockwell rig running Superior and Tough Country stickers in the comp... Wait...

I liked Ryan's quote on Pirate... "Do you think Brett Farve only wears Wrangler Jeans?" Really guy?

One of the driving forces for this comp is always going to be the Return On Investment that the sponsors actually feel like they get (because it is hard to quantify). Good or bad...

In the end, TTC was a good time wheeling... (and the days that followed in JV were hard to compare to anything) possibly once in a lifetime for folks on this side of the country... I wouldn't change a thing...

2012 will be the champions cup year, and no you don't have to run the rig you won it in. If so, some people would be in SUA cj's with 33's.... yeah right. My build has already started...

And please don't be a timmy cameron nut swinger... Leo drives the fat girl with even more reckless abandon that Tim ever did. That rig is pretty cool, but it's just another rig man... if you hung out with it for a week, it would be nothing more than another buddy's trail rig. That being said, Leo is a pretty cool guy, and I'm looking forward to wheeling with him again.

carwash
11-19-2010, 09:28 PM
I'm not even sure how to respond, i don't really want to start a **** storm...

you doubt it why? cuz no one can possibly drive like (or maybe even better) than timmy cameron? Tim got crazy popular cuz he had some guys that followed him everywhere with video cameras and pasted it all on you tube. If you think no one can drive like him, then you haven't wheeled with that many throttle jockey people. I'm not doubting his wheeling ability, He's awesome for sure. I'm just saying he's not quite as god-like as everyone titles him. if you equate the term nutswinger with pirate, then you have been spending too much time there yourself. some expressions can exist outside of the pbb.

I didn't notice being sucked off in this thread, please elaborate.

People run the TTC Claw because it's an unreal tire, its the best tire in the 54" size, any less tire size is a loser at TTC, and to top it off, they give you a set if you want them. Not many turn them down.

Mine had no problems cleaning out... If I had to purchase a tire of that size, meaning 49 or larger, i'd go with thew claws. I think it's king in that size class... the side tread is unreal. It is a very soft compound and it held up amazingly well even in the super sharp rocks of the hammers.

And I agree, a TSL in a 54 would be freakin' awesome.

I will do my best to get another set of the claws for the champions cup...
