View Full Version : H2 unit bearing WTF!?!?!
The girlfriend bought an '06 H2 with a 3 year warrenty about a month ago. Saturday morning I drove it and heard a loud sqealling from the drivers front wheel. She'd been telling me about it for weeks but thats the first time I heard it. So I went back home, jacked it up and just as I had thought the unit bearing/wheel bearing was SHOT! I could move the top and bottom of the tire in and out about 3 inches. Instead of me fixing it and killing her warrenty we took it back to the dealer so they could do it. She called this morning to check on it and they said NOTHING was wrong with it at all... Long story short, I went there and after a talk with the service manager the Xeina police were nice enough to show me the door. But before they got there I was aloud in the shop to "see for myself" and found absolutly NOTHING wrong with the bearing! It spun smooth and quiet and was as tight as a new one. So how the hell can this be possible!? I know a bad bearing when I see one and Saturday it looked like the wheel could fall off at any second, but today it was like new and they swear they didn't work on it...

Did they replace it and are trying to cover up a recall or a known problem..?
That is weird...

Sounds fishy to me just about like when they come out to look at a telephone line or DSL problem and don't fix nothing yet the problem goes away:rolleyes:

Jack it up and take the wheel off ad look to see if the bearing is new or not.
Also when you jacked it up did you jack it up by the lower control arm? If so make sure it wasnt the ball joint moving and not the bearing. If they had it on a lift that could go un noticed.

If this was the dealer she bought it from, maybe they were hiding the fact that they should have caught it during their pre sale inspection.

That does sound weird. Don't take this the wrong way, but how much play did it actually have? I would say 3" of play in the bearings and there would be more issues than just squealing. It would feel very hot and the brakes would likely feel real spongy as the wobbling hub and rotor would push the brake caliper out. Not debating that something was wrong, but maybe need to look at something else.

I just put new unit bearings on my dodge before harlan and the wheel on her H2 moved just like mine did before I fixed them. And you are right it could be something else, but either way something WAS wrong, and they told me they did nothing to it and now nothing it wrong....

Possibly the bearings are now siezed up in a manner that in making the hub not moveable like before when a couple had gone bad & fallen out?
I assume you jacked it back up at home & everything is still fine?
I'd guess you could easily visually tell if they'd replaced the bearing or not. As stated above, double-check that it's not another part like the ball joint or something similar that's actually bad...
