OK I'm not one to check my oil when filling up nor do I change it every 3000 miles. Here is the problem....about 3 months ago I checked the oil and I was 2 qts low, refilled. When I changed the oil last week I only got less than 5 qts out with filter. Details '08 JK Rubicon 6 cyl., 6 speed manual, 6 qts oil for change, there is a sign of wetness between the transmission and bell housing but no other signs of any other leaks; not enough to leave a spot on the garage floor. Any ideas????? A side note; my front and rear diffs are leaking. I checked the breather tubes they are free. I will be taking the jeep to the dealer in 2 weeks and just want some insight so I don't look like an ass.

Thanks,

Jon

i know of several that are and have had oil consumption tests done to them. the dealer will tell you that 1 qt every couple thousand is normal and to a certain extent they are correct. all engines will use a little oil (new s2000 hondas loved 1 qt every 1000 miles). so how much in how long is the question. 1qt in 5000 miles and you have no worries. 1qt in a 1000 miles and i would be looking into it.

good luck

Well got the jeep back; and at the dealer you get what ya pay for. Everything was warranty work. I got the famous answer; it didn't make any noise when we drove it; aka sqeak in the rear wheel. They did at least change the front diff gasket and put in a new pcv valve. They think the pcv valve was the reason for the oil use. I also wanted them to check for a rattle in the gate; they heard it and said my spare was too big for the factory mount. Will they fix it because they sold it to me like that, of course not!!! As for the rattle I found it when I got home; I had one of the boys sit in the back on the way home to pin point it; it was a damn loose plastic cover over the top gate hinge.:mad::mad::mad: Not to name any names; DON'T buy a Jeep in Lawrenceburg IN!!!!!!!!!!!

Oil consumption is a huge issue with those engines, you have to check them all the top and keep em topped off. I have a customer at work that stops in every 500 miles for a quart of oil and jeep will do nothing about it.

X2... I encountered a customer w/ a Caravan w/ 3.8L that consumed about 4qts of oil in 3000 miles. They never check it.

No signs of oil leakage.

Pulled the upper intake, found a lot of oil residue in 2 of the intake runners more than the other 4... the 2 that were closest to the hose that connects to the PCV valve.

Also I pulled the EGR tube and there was TONS of burnt oil residue/tar like crap in it... the EGR valve was attached to the exhaust manifold that was on the same bank as the 2 intake runners being gunked up... not really significant... just confirms that a ton of oil was being burned in the combustion chambers.

I replaced the PCV valve and haven't heard back since... if I see the customer's car any time soon and this thread is still active I'll update it:beers:

My buddy works for Audi and 1Qt per 1300 miles is what they consider normal.
