Hey everyone just curious how many miles per gallo do you get with your diesel not towing? I have a 99 pstroke stock except exhaust and somehow I'm only getting 10-12 in town and I drive like an 80 year old grandma! it does have bigger tires which may be a factor but still 12 mpg!

Have you corrected the speedo/odo for the larger tires? If not, you are actually getting more miles out of a tank of fuel

fordman00
07-12-2011, 01:15 PM
No,I actually have not but I hope to be getting a chip soon and maybe down size my tire size.

I have an 03' Cummins auto, 2wd and get about 20-21 daily driving mixture and get about 15-16 towing my Jeep running at 70. If I go above 70ish it drops fast. All stock with a Leer Snug Top on it.

2010 dodge 2500 4x4 mega cab
16-18 highway or around town 35 mph or 75 mph doesnt matter

But put a 24' GN behind it and BAM bout 8-12

I am running 33's with the odo corrected

I put a 6" lift and 37's on it for about 3 months and took that **** right back off. It Dropped to 12-13 MPG and with me averaging 1000-1500 miles a week that wasnt going to cut it...

I have a 99 with the 6 speed 4x4 on 35s. I get 12 highway, 12 city, and 12 regardless of how much weight I have behind it. I have a ts 6 position and keep it on the 50 horse. Not much difference bt the 50 horse and the.rest of the settings with stock injectors other than the amount of smoke imo. I hope to lower it to a 2 or 4 inch lift (currently an 8") so that should help my milage a little. I want to get it up to around 15.

i just sold my old 97 12 valve 4x4 5 speed x-cab that was getting 25ish empty and around 18 towing. had well over 500.000 on it too. my 03 crew cab is around 22 empty and 14 towing. it is a two wheel auto tho.gabby.

I have a 05 Dodge CCLB 3500 single rear wheel 6 speed. On the highway it will all most break 20. Hand calculated it comes in right at 19.97 most of the time. Towing I usually get 14-15. I drive right at the speed limit and run my smarty jr on #2 with an intake and exhaust.

Fordman00, I've had 6 or 7 Powerstrokes. My last one was a 2000 CCSB and the best it would get was 14 and 9-10 towing. They were good trucks but I couldn't get the milage up.

What size are the current tires?

I agree with the post above about larger and/or more aggressive tires causing a drop in fuel economy, and combined with lift is even worse. But part of that is also because the odometer is now off and you are getting a lower than actual miles reading on the odo (assuming odo/speedo has not been corrected).

For an example, going from a stockish 265/75R16 to a 35ish" tire nets around a 9% difference in distance travelled per revolution of the tire and thus the odo will show 9% less miles. So if you fill up with 20 gallons of fuel and the odo says 250 miles that is 12.5 MPG, however you actually traveled around 272 miles so the corrected MPG would be 13.6. Then include the added rolling resistance, rolling mass, and increased aerodynamic drag for another 1-2 MPG hit.

On my gas 6.0L Chevy 2500HD going from the stock street 245/75R16 to 285/75R16 BFG AT cost me about 1-1.5 MPG with a corrected odo.

My 02 duramax is stock with 128,000 miles on it and I only get 13.5 to 14.5 mpg. How much do I need to spend and what do I need to buy to get 24 mpg?

Looks like he has a tuner.and from what I've gathered here and there check for boost leaks, stay close to stock tire size, intake may help a little, and regular fluid changes and filter changes.

Thats really low, LB7s are one of the most fuel efficient light duty diesels on the market. Have you had your injectors replaced? Notice any excessive black smoke on exceleration? LB7s are known for their injector problems that rob fuel economy and eventually blow holes in pistons. Mine is a reg cab long bed with 4" exhaust, no muffler. Its tuned with EFI Live on a dsp5 switch. I have a 'stock', 'econ', 'tow', 'street', and 'race' tunes on mine. The switch was $40 from http://duramaxtuner.com/dsp5 and a friend of mine writes EFI live tunes so he hooked me up big time. I could see what he would charge if interested.

mine is a 02 crewcab 4x4 auto. no lift with bfg tires, not sure what size but I will check. They look close to stock. When I bought the truck I took it to a shop and they said the injectors were fine. that was 10,000 miles ago. I was told if they were bad it would smoke at a idle. Mine dont smoke when idling and only slight smoke at full throttle. I have heard that 13.5 was normal for my truck and some people say they get 20+. Id be happy with 19-20 mpg.

Also, another thing to consider is what gears you are runnin? Mine has 4.10's and honestly for what I use the truck for, and with the granny low in the 6 speed, I've conddred dropping to a 3.73 or 3.55. I have so over the road hauled friends that run a taller gear strictly for the milage. They say with the granny low, the 4.10's are pointless. I know im revving at around 2200 rpm's down the highway at 70.

Stock tires are 265 75r16s, checked your air filter recently? sounds dumb but give it a check also i really can recomend a 4" back exhaust system.
mine is 4x4 auto getting ready to be lowered 2" all around with 285 60r18 nitto terra grapplers.

I've got a late '99 2wd F250supercab. It gets 15mpg pulling a 9000 lb. trailer/truck combo. Don't know what it gets by itself, only use it to pull. I've thought about getting a TS chip, but lots of other stuff to spend $ on before that.

All of you are doing better than my 08 F350 dulley. Ran from Cleveland to Hamilton yesterday pulling a 12 ft. box that was empty. I got 11.2 mpg running 65 mph. Pulled my 20' box last weekend with my Wrangler in it. I got 9.7 mpg at 200 miles round trip. At 4.00 a gallon this thing is killing me!!!!

I've got a 06 with a 6.0 (yeah, I know) and a SCT tuner on the performance setting. Around town, I get around 16, on the highway, I can get around 19 if I set the cruise and not get in a hurry. On the 65 hp tow setting, I get around 13 or 14 depending on terrain. That's hauling a deckover with a Jeep on it.

I use an '02 van with a 5.7, a quad in the van, pulling my 28' toy hauler full with a tracker and 2 quads only get like 6-7mpg  I think it needs a tuneup and that's horrible mileage, but I guess if I'm only gonna be getting 12-14mpg anyays with a diesel then I guess I should just be happy i'm not making payments on one

I thought you sold your truck, I saw what I thought was yours on a Dealer Ad in your area.
I've got the same truck, do you still have the original heads, gaskets , studs etc.? I get ~ 14-15 unloaded and 10-12 towing 7K.

I had it for sale and a kid told me he'd take it then backed out. Since then, I bought another crawler and trailer, so it's sticking around for a while. It's completely stock with the original heads, studs, gaskets, etc. I talked to the guys at SCT before I bought the tuner and was told that it would be safe as long as I stayed out of it. I have a pyro gauge and it never goes above 1200. I'm sure it won't last forever, but I treat it pretty nicely.
