Well that depends on how brave you get. You can wheel the whole weekend and have a blast, but unless you bring spares for everything, stay off the higher rated trails. Beware of 4's and 5's.

IMHO it's not that bad as long as u know your vehicle from top to bottom and are prepared to fix what ever you need to in order to get back home...

Honestly, I plan on going as mostly an observer. The great thing about Harlan is that there are bypasses for just about everything and there is tons of stuff to do and see just by driving around. Don't not go if you're afraid of breaking. Just use some common sense and you will do fine. I know that nobody in any group I run with will intentionally try to get your rig damaged, especially if your rig isn't built to handle something.

Would love to go to this since I've wanted to go to Harlan forever. I always go to Haspin and need to venture here. I've seen pics and magazine articles about this place, problem is I would have to stay off 4/5 rated trails as I can't trailer down there. If there are other people going down who are going to be doing 3 and maybe 4 rated trails I might be interested in going down.

The only thing I didn't like about Putney was the drive through the mountain to get to all the good stuff. It rained and made it hell to get to the Evarts side. Not mention if you broke something. You would never get it back.
There are showers at the campground in town. http://www.evartskentucky.com/north_evarts_campground.html
Portable crappers are placed around where we camp. I read somewhere there were free shower houses in Evarts somewhere.
I have a 10x14 condo tent that was used once. It's easy up and huge. I sleep in the trailer, so I don't really need it.
We stay on the mountain, so it's just us and nature. A shower would be nice though...

There are lots of different rentals in Evarts. It helps to know people that have rented them before.

I'm mostly just a lurker, but I thought I'd post up since I'm going to be at Harlan this week-end. I usually stay at the public campground in Everts. I'll be pulling the crawlers down with a motorhome, so I have to have somewhere easy to get to. Hope I get to wheel some with you guys. I'll be in a white XJ with an orange exo and/or an orange buggy. I think I saw some of you at fall crawl lat year.:beers:

Glad you had better luck, and a good trip!
Robert
I agree,I got lucky..That never happens. I got jammed between the tree root you see in the pic and a large rock on the pass side rear tire.It took a high lift jack and some winching from the side to save the tire.

Maybe... I've still got two split ones that say otherwise.
Yeah, I'm not putting my money on them.

nice Vids Chris thanks for posting them... Just a note they are labeled incorrectly. that is Upper rock Garden, not Middle.
I'm always amazed how tame everything looks in the vids. When I was sliding down the rock sideways knowing there was a drop there. It was a pucker moment, looks like nothing in video.

I was under the Toyota the other night and found some more crap... :D
Nick(Coppertop) I guess that rock in the lower Rock Garden got me a little more than we thought it did... Tcase hit the floor board and shifted everything about 1/2" to the drivers side when it broke my make shift solid trans mount... My welds don't look like they held up to well either ... So far i don't see anything else, but time will tell...
:beers:

Hodgie, when I arrived on the scene, that rock already had you hung up.You must have dropped down on it pretty hard to cause all the carnage.
Time for a skid plate.

Hodgie I feel for you I found some stuff too..
Well been working on the splattt today and got the starter swapped out and the chick at autozone looked at the starter I took in there and said you just took that off a running sami? yes... It was all rusted up and full of mudd... I just laughed at her and said it still works when you tap it a few times..lol... she tested it and nothing... then I asked her to test the new and when she put it in the machine she did not clamp it down so when it started up it spun in the box and she jump a mile high.. I just laughed again and said ok Ill take it...
while swapping out the start I looked up and noticed that the left side of the zor snatch and saw that the frame mount that it bolts to had almosted riped off the frame.. guess I need to make a new support now.. and i did ripe out the rear upper shock mount.. man more carnage than I thought from Harlan....

Yea the more i think about i remember a good jaring when i abruptly came to a stop there... There a scratch on the tcase, that i couldn't get a good pic of that looked like where the contact was nade... That dent in the floor board is like a dipple the exact same shape as the top of the tcase... about an 1/8" deep...
