winch help

I have a 9500# t-maxx the motor turns and it free wheels but wont engage like teethe on gear is stripped anybody heard of anything like this?

Pull that side cover where the engage/disengage lever is and see if the lever is moving the splined rings together. Could be a pin on the lever.
