went wheeling today.....
 

Well most of you should know what the weather was like today well after I got off work a buddy of mine and I went wheeling. After that was all said and done I went and washed the mud off my TJ well now when I drive there is a very loud sound comming from the driver side wheel, dont know what it is sounds like just screaching almost like a school board...Think some thing is freezing or frozen? or did something break. Didnt wheel to hard today just some mud holes and hills.

rocks in the caliper/brake pad? Jack it up and move your wheels back and forth. Should help out.

I personally find my TJ runs better dirty. Mine wouldn't know what to do if it was wheeled and washed in the same day. If nothing else, turn the radio up. I recommend 94.9 The Sound.

yeah, they play different stuff than everyone else, but they still only have a playlist of about 60 songs that they recycle...

The new 96 Rock is cool lately, but on Sirius, i'm all about Left Of Center, Backspin, Buzzsaw, Octane, etc... i'd die without my sirius.

Sirus all the way!!! anywho...well that was the problem but i noticed something when I had the wheel off. This is my first jeep and im still learning, the studs were moving back and forth when I applyed pressure about a 1/16 of an inch. the axle shaft nut was moving to. is this normal or are my shafts pulling out? The 4wheel drive was working fine today. Is there something I can get to help me with understanding my axels and how to work on them?

might be the unit bearing the axle runs through, i dont think it should have any play in it like that but im not sure

anyone else know whats going on???

How new is this jeep and what has it been through as far as wheeling?

Just light wheeling slight hills and mud holes. its an 06, I dont know if i made it sound confusing or not but its just the studs for my wheel they move back and forth like a 1/16

tighten the lug nuts? If the wheel bearings are smoked and it is an 06 you must be harder than what the 30 front can stand.

its not the actual lug nuts its the studs when the wheel is off. that are moving. This pic is not mine got it off google but just showing an example. The red is on the wheel stud when i grab the stud i can move it like 1/16 back and forth in the hole that it comes through in the rotor. Not sure if that clears things up or not. If not i give up

Tighten the hell out of the lug nuts with an impact but not too tight and cross your fingers!

The actual stud is not moving its all moving together like the rotor is not seated all the way on the studs

Bearings! Usually they last 100k.

The studs should be "pressed" into the unit bearing on the axle.
If you are able to move them at all "seperately" from each other then they should be replaced. You might also be looking at getting a new rim because they may have damaged it when they were loose.

If the studs "all move together" when you wiggle one then you are probably looking at a new hub/unit bearing.

Another test you can do is to jack the tire off the ground (with it bolted on) and try to move the tire with your hand. If it moves when you apply pressure at 12 o'clock & 6 o'clock then your bearing is toast. At 3 & 6 only then it may be tie rod end.
