Who agrees, Deer vs Beef?

I grilled up some deer steaks this evening and thought to myself, "deer has much better taste than a beef filet", anyone agree?

While I am a big fan of Deer I don't think I would agree with that statement. I eat deer because I hunt it and it's cheap. Deer loin is great on the grill with some worchestershier (sp?) sauce or in a skillet fried in butter but I would much rather eat a nice grilled strip or filet.

While I never buy steaks to grill at home because I am an avid hunter. I would have to say beef is better. But there is a level of pride in eating your own kill that weighs heavy.

On the other hand venison is the most healthy red meat you can eat.

most deer steaks i end up with are tough and probably from a old deer. but the few times ive had steaks from young, tender one, there is no comparison. i much prefer the deer and that wild taste.

if deer could be harvested when they are eating from the lush fields, instead of foraging and bark and acorns, i think there would be a lot more fans of their meat.

Maybe it is because I shot it. I like wild turkey better than I do chicken as well. But it's all good with a little straight Makers :beers:

My girlfriend eats a strip steak when I have some deer on the side, and I would rather have the deer. Don't get me wrong, I like a good steak.

I fix my deer with just garlic powder and crushed red pepper, grill it about medium rare.

deer by far. especially when you get a nice fat 2 year old you get that juicy tenderness to it. my note definitly goes to deer meat

It seems you got the taste. Next time your down in Slade, hit me up, I'll show how it's supposed to be grilled. Can't go over medium though.

There may be a little corn in my field.

I'll take a big slice of pig butt any day.:D

I have to agree deer is all in how you prepare it. I just like to sear it on both sides and leave the middle a warm medium rare.

Europeans have a level of cooking that is even less than "rare"... translates to "blue"

pass... :D

I actually like buffalo (bison) better than deer or beef ... but they are much harder to bring down and the ranchers tend to get upset when you shoot at them  :D

That sounds like "wipe its' butt, scrape off the hair, slide across the grill and make sure it lands on my plate."

That is a little much for me. I like beef medium rare and Venison rare.

BIGRAM 02-25-2010 02:06 PM

My first experience with rare was about 9 years ago in Park City, UT. I had what they called a baseball steak, about 16 oz filet and round as a baseball. It was rare as could be. Didn't know what to think at first but after the first bite, I figured out what it is all about. Since then I don't go over med rare.

Damn good cut.
