T18 into a CJ7
I am thinking about doing the t18 trans swap in my 1980 Cj7. I am wondering if the trans bolts right in, is there any changes in my driveshaft leanghts, ect.. anyone ever done this swap? Right now I have a T150 transmission on a 304 V8. Thanks

direct bolt in. I did this swap on a jeep i owned previously. retained the dana20 tcase as well.
at least i recall it being a direct swap, it was like 10 years ago.. |
There are many different kinds of T18's if you are lucky enough to find one out of a cj and it has the adapter to bolt it to the model 20 transfer case it will bolt right in, however your driveshaft lengths will change. You can get a T18 out of a jeep truck as well but it will need a short input shaft put on it. Ford T18's will also work with some modifications.
This guy knows all there is to know about T18's http://www.partsmike.com/tech-help/id-t18/ |
Ok, this makes more sense... (I saw the other post first)...
The T-18 that you want is from 78-79 CJ ONLY... (6.32 first gear, aka wide ratio) I was thinking that the 80 CJ was the oddball year -- a short output Dana300?? Are you saying that you have a Dana20 currently in the '80 CJ? '80 was also the year that IH made a Dana300 that had the Dana20 bolt pattern... good luck finding one of those... I know of 1... and it's not for sale. |
btw, here's your T-150 next to an NP435 (also very similar size to T-18):

And finally....
(now that I've wet your appetite...) I have the T-18 in question... but I wasn't really planning on splitting with it... a few Dana20's as well... When you know for sure what tcase you have and which one you want to run after conversion, let us know... Give me a call at some point, I'll PM my number... |
