Best to go with someone who's been there so you don't waste time trying to guess what trails to run. The trails are better marked than they used to be but it's still very easy to get off track which is a HUGE No-No. The EJS would be great for first timers. They lead and schedule the trail rides,provide interesting info along the way, you get to see tons of different rigs and the money goes to helping keep trails open to the public.
If you end up going alone you might try stopping at City Market in the mornings, people used to hang out there for "pickup" rides. You may find some with similarly equipt rigs that you can hook up with for the day.
Avoid July and August, you'll bake in the Sun.
