in short, a 231 out of a similar Year Grand cherokee will be a direct bolt in. I swapped one from a 96 into my 95, and am gonna swap it again into my 98.
the main issue is the Input shaft length, there are 3 different lengths that the 231 could have. IF it is different than what your current one is, you can swap it out for the input from your current 249
