Backpacking trip
I thought about putting this in trail runs, and if there is any interest you are all welcome to participate.
My son Jared and I would like to do some two-three day hikes. We have been doing regular day hikes but now it's time to step it up a bit. I had intended to stay local, but then I got a brainstorm of an idea. What about sleeping under the natural bridge arch. We could park at the creek and backpack to the arch. As there are three water crossings I think we will wait till spring. From memory, I would say it is less than a four mile hike. Last time I was down there, it was covered in trash. We could do a nice clean up of the area haul some trashbags out, staging them at the end of the bridge for another good summaritan to toss into their truck. If it is only 2-3 bags we could haul it out ourselves. Does anyone know if there is any camping restrictions? Are we allowed to light a small fire? Is their a specific ranger station that would need to be contacted? On a nice spring day we may even get a few visitors under there. |

I can't remember if the Park Ranger guy has been on this version of the site...
BlazerBrad and 78Buford ran into the rangers back in Nov... anybody get a card guys? Casey (RedRiverRanger... as in "Ford Ranger" not park ranger) might know how to get in touch?? Sorry I can't add more info Paul, sounds like fun. Also keep in mind that the "Narrows" has been vehicle free for a little while now... would be very interesting to see the regrowth

I am sure Casey will know more but I would recommend looking in to some of the marked and mapped trails in Red River Gorge. There are tons and tons of trails that are for exactly what you are talking about. As beautiful as "the narrows" is to drive across and hike beneath, the trails in Red River Gorge offer much better scenery in my opinion. I hiked "Auxier Ridge" with a friend a few years ago. It was a great hike and the scenery was breath taking. Also, you can pick a named hiking trail and tell your family exactly where you will be in case of emergency...

Paul, I agree. Red River is a real nice place to backpack. I have been there several times and still find new things to see every time im there. I have USGS TOPO Maps of the area and you can borrow them if you want. I would also like to take my grandson(7)on a hike this spring, so keep us in mind.

Day hiking
There are 14 miles of hiking trails right on my road in Oxford maintained my University of Miami. Plus miles and miles at Houston Woods. My son Gabe hikes with us regularly, he's 6 and is usually good for a sub 2 hour hike. Any more than that and he really starts dragging. Probably becouse I try to keep a pretty good pace.
I've wanting and trying to go every weakend so your welcome to come along for some light day hikes. Throughout the winter. I'm planning on going on the hangover run this weakend, I'm just going to ride my dual sport there, play a bit and ride home. If you show up we can make some plans. If not give me a shout on here or call me (513) 703-0296. Paul |
