how strong is a crysler 8.25
here within the next month ill be upgrading my front axle in my xj to a d44 but my question is how strong is the 8.25 ill be running 33's and the most ill go up to is a 36 so will it hold up to it for moderate wheeling any input will be greatly appercaited

My understanding is that the early 27 spline is okay, but the later 29 (which I think your 98 would have) is comparable to a D44. I'd trust it to run 36s.
I'm sure somebody will chime in to tell me I'm fulluvit. :) Robert

i have heard that its almost as strong as a d44 but wanted to know if it was worth up grading with alloy shafts and a locker

stronger than a tirdy5! I would run 36's with light wheeling in mind.

I'm not familiar with them in off-roading applications, but I know they will not hold up under a completely stock V-8 powered Dakota or Durango under hard use on the pavement (if it was part time 2wd....full-time 4wd would hold up because the front was always taking some of the torque). Rarely had problems with the 9.25" rears but the 8.25" would fail predictably in a short period of time.
Granted, a lot of the failures seemed to revolve around the carrier and especially the trash-loc equipped ones so an upgraded carrier would likely make a difference. On paper the 8.25" 29 spline is just slightly below the D44 in strength because of the slightly smaller ring gear and shafts (8.5" ring gear and 30-spline shafts)......but quite a bit stronger than a D35. |
