got your message rob... you need to go with him to a notary (most banks) and have your's and his signatures notarized. That clears you.

You are not clear untill it is done at title office. Its a common misconception that notarizing is enough it is not.

that's what I wos wandering....knock on wood something bad happens involving my car before he transfers it, he could technically walk away and dispose of title as if he never had it and for the record, its still my car...

not that anyone would of course but just trying to cover myself...

so can we go to ky courthouse. or it got to be oh courthouse?

the car will have to be inspected by some one at a ohio BMV office before they will make an ohio tittle for it... at least that was the way it was when i bought a Ky car a few years back...

What I have always done is notarize the title, make a copy of both sides and have that notarized. Then I take it to the ky courthouse and tell them I sold it out of state.

So what exactly would you consider something bad happening ????? and how would that effect you after you sold the vehicle and it left the state ?????

you being law enforcement I'm glad u chimed in

say I get a call saying my vehical was involved in a accident and someone is hurt. or simply a parking ticket/ red light camera...

.do I have a argument when I state that its not mine, I sold it? I have no control over when the buyer transfers it to his name, or gets insurance on it. which might be next day, or might be two weeks.... in that gap, if something happens, I'm going to be reponsible for it still since authorities say its still in my name...meanwhile I would have already dropped insurance on it so I'm not protected there....

just wondering what if...

As said do what ever you would do to sell one in ky. It is up to him to go to ohio bmv and get the vin checked and an ohio title.

if I recall ky requires notorized title, notorized bill of sale and notorized odometer reading.

they have free General Bill of sales forms on the internet . I always make 2 copys of a bill of sale and have each party sign and date them. You now have proof that someone bought your car if something were to happen. A friend of mine had a problem with a corvette he sold and the proof of bill of sale helped him out of some legal issues.
