If he took it to a shop,had them pull apart both axles and weld the diffs,then put both axles back together he probably does have $750 in them. And if he had a shop take them apart,then took the thirds to someone else,then back to shop he'd probably have more than that in them! Not that its right,and it would completly defeat the point of welding it...
