Ohio Plates

Anyone else not able to stand the new Ohio plate design? And sounds like pretty soon it'll be all you can get.

COLUMBUS - As of Monday, "Beautiful Ohio'' became the state's standard license plate.

The state Bureau of Motor Vehicles announced it is phasing out the older red, white and blue "Sunburst'' license plates, while broadening access to the 6-month-old "Beautiful Ohio'' design.

The state supply of Sunburst license plates - introduced in 2004 -- is expected to run out by late November, according to Lindsey Bohrer, a spokeswoman with the Ohio BMV. So beginning this week, anyone ordering specialized plates -- including logos, personal initials and vanity designs -- automatically gets the new design.

Bohrer said it's a tradition to enlist the input of the First Lady. In this case, Gov. Ted Strickland's wife, Frances, offered suggestions on the design. Motorists who order plates by mail, and don't pick one design, will get the newer plates, Bohrer said.

Ohioans also can let the deputy registrar pick when going in person until the Sunburst inventory is depleted, Bohrer said.

"So, if customers prefer the Sunburst plate, they are advised to call ahead to their local (BMV registrar) to ensure that the Sunburst plates are still available,'' Bohrer said Monday.

The "Beautiful Ohio" plate debuted Nov. 23 as an alternative to Ohio's standard "Sunburst" plate. BMV Registrar Carolyn Y. Williams said the state agency has received numerous requests that the Beautiful Ohio license plate be made available to anyone ordering special or personalized plates.

Ohioans bought more than 850,000 "Beautiful Ohio'' plates through May, according to the BMV.

Standard plates typically get replaced every five years, Bohrer said.

Round-the-clock service is available on the internet at www.oplates.com (or by calling 1-866-675-2837) to buy licenses plates or renew vehicle registrations
