Aluminum Welding?
I just bought an older beater canoe from a family member, but it needs a crack welded in the bottom & side. The internets tell me I can buy rods for my stick welder to weld this; has anyone done this before? Where can I buy these local to Middletown?
I have a 220v AC/DC stick & cheapo 120v mig. Anyone care to chime in with help? |

I bet Wieler in Dayton would have them, I would get a very small rod.

Aluminum is tricky. I mean, it ain't impossible, and with some practice I'm sure you could do a lot better than I do. But I don't think you wanna practice on a boat. Robert

The old beater cane wouldn't be worth the gas money to drive down that way... I have a nice canoe of my own; this one was just bought to have as a spare for family/friend who want to tag along.

There is Harris welding supply in Monroe it is right behind froggy blues on 63 or they have a weiler of the Rt 4 bypass also. The best way to weld thin aluminum is to TIG it but you can use aluminum wire and 100% argon in a MIG. Your MIG has the power to do it but you have to use the shielding gas and the right wire. Give me a call if you need any more help.

My buddy here in town has an aluminum set up. I'll call him and see what it'll take for him to do it.
