welding a winch plate?

So I picked up a smittybuilt plate for the tj. Problem is it sticks out way past my framerails. I'm not running a front swaybar so I have open real estate in front of the grille. About 3". Can I just slide the plate back on the frame and weld it on? I want the winch as tight as I can get against the grille

Why not bolt it in place instead of welding. As long as it bolted to the frame you should be fine.
