Rod End Question...

I am trying to decide between Johny Joint type rod ends or hiems. I have found that buy the time you but everything needed for hiems, you are oretty close to the price of Johny Joints.

My question is do I need JJ's at both ends of my links or can I run bushings at the frame end and JJ's at the axle end?

JJ's at both ends if your budget allows for it. You won't be happy long term with the bushing at one end, unless you like slop, noise, and binding during flex.

I have a set of weld on cartridge joints for sale if your interested..I prefer the threaded collar over the snap ring of a JJ.

This jus came to mind....will JJ's on each end flex enough? Seems like the joint housing would hit the mounting tabs?

I know that I will get 45 different answers but here goes....Johny Joints or Hiems? If Hiems, what size is recommended?:confused:

It will be fine. I have JJ on both end and dont get no were close to bottoming they out.

3/4 heims and spacers would be PLENTY on a Sammie....if you dont plan on doing any street driving heim joints are fine

in my opinion they first invented jj or ballistic joints, (and all the other variations), TO BE EXACT REPLACEMENT INTO JEEP STAMPED SHEAT METAL JUNK BRACKETS!!!!!

im not running anything jeep on my toy!!!

try QS COMPONETS ........
they have all kinds of kits and im prity sure the Static Radial Load rating of 18,810lbs is plenty

My rig will never see the street so I am thinking hiems will be what I go with. I was thinking 3/4" would be ok but I wanted to hear some opinions here rather than Pirate wher you need to run 12" hiems at minimun....

My rig started asa Sammy but will not have many Sammy prts on it when Iam through.

What style and rating is on the heim? Not all are created the same by a long shot. You better buy atleast one extra for a trail spare also. :)

The ones that cheapthrills mentioned above from racing rod ends. They are 3/4" x 3/4" rated at 18,000 + pounds....

go fish. definatly get the nicer ones. chromoly/teflon. i swear by QA1. think rated at 27000. i love wrenchin, but not on the trail.

When a heim fails, it fails completely. You either lose a link or steering arm completely from the attachment point. If it's a link, your axle shifts and probably wastes a coilover or airshock.

When a JJ fails, it just gets sloppy and horribly loose. but you will still get off the trail and back to camp without wasting a $500 shock. And it's rebuildable with common tools and a large bolt. I carry the guts for one JJ with me and a rebuild tool, and I'm good to go.

That alone should help you make your decision. Everything breaks, it's a matter of damage control when it does happen.

i been runnin qa1 heims for a couple years now with some hard beatin and never had a problem...i think its a wash...heims all the way...if your doin both ends thats like 700-800 in joints to save a $240 shock???? does not make sense to me...especially never having a problem with them...

It was a 500.00 shock. Coilovers run much higher than that. It may be a carWASH though.

I enjoy peace of mind when wheeling... i try to get rid of every possible break point. But, i speak from experience on the shock getting wasted. I don't recall who was at the badlands on that one... but i had a heim break and folded a swayawy coilover damn near in half.

Now, they were cheaper heims, i was young and retarded.. but i really dig the johnnies now. I guess it's run what you know... I would run some fat ass heims on a rig... they just get noisy too...

Both are good, just giving my reasons for why i run what i do.

used to see ALL KINDS of rigs with tractor heims on the trail. pull up a seat, grab a drink, and watch the carnage... cause you just knew they put that much peace of mind into the rest of there truck, too.
