  • Crawler Hauler

Picked up a 24' enclosed trailer today. Plan is to set the front 10' up like my toy hauler was. The bad thing is to fit my rig in, i have to put some stock tires on the front. Yeah, that is a pita, but for the cost, I'll deal with it. It is real tight, but it fit. I'll start the build after i get my rig ready for next year.

    Nice!

What does that do to your tongue weight? Are you going to be able to add enough stuff up front to balance it?

I think so. The ass end of my rig doesn't weigh much, and the majority of the weight is over the axles. By the time I add fresh, black, and grey tanks, Fridge, water heater, bathroom, plumbing, wiring, 12v/120 breaker/fuse box, A/C, furnace, cabinets, and gear it should be good. We will see...

I'm debating on selling this one and finding one that is at least 84" inside. 77" is kinda low. I do like that this one doesn't tower over the van. Not sure 7" taller would matter that much when towing. The main issue is the camper showers are on a platform to keep the plumbing inside. At 77" my head will be pretty close to the ceiling.

In regards to the additional 7" height on a trailer, it will make a difference in wind resistance when running 70+ mph down the freeway. Not saying it would make it intolerable or anything like that, but if you ran the same grades down a freeway back to back with two trailers that were identical except for the height you would notice the difference. You could do the calculations but would guess the increased wind resistance would be equivalent to adding several thousand pounds of weight to the trailer. Again, not saying you shouldn't do it as the increased comfort and space may very will be worth the extra drag going down the highway.

In my previous job performing powertrain durability testing we installed wings similar to below to add more load onto trucks when testing them. If you put a wing like this on a 300+ HP gas engine fullsize truck you could drop it's top speed from 100+ mph down to 80 mph easily. It would have way more effect at high speeds than adding 2,000 lbs. of weight in the bed.

This thing is at least a foot shorter than my camper, so this should tow pretty good then. I will most likely just build this one. I would probably end up buying a new one to get the size I wanted, and that is more than I want to spend. If you're taller that 6'5", you should probably stay out of it, or wear a helmet. . LOL

I started by removing all the panels so I could insulate and run wiring. I used 1" 4x8 foam for insulation.
There was some ceiling panels damaged from a leak. It was easy to see were the water was coming in. The steel rubbed holes in the aluminum.

There weren't any roof vents, so I installed 3 roof vents, one in the rear, one up front, and one in the bathroom. I reinforced the roof where the A/C was going and install that. Then came the furnace, power box, and water heater.

Got most of the panels back on and one window. Time to frame in the bathroom and run the water lines.

I have made quite a bit of progress since last posting. I have installed the gray and black tanks, water lines, plumbing and vents, cabinets, microwave, flooring, propane lines and Electric.

Making the propane lines that run the water heater, furnace, and fridge.

Thanks for the offer, but the power center I have does all that.

Yes. The camper i sourced it from had both. The cover also says auto switching.

Looks like I forgot to post up the rest of the build. Going to fast forward a bit. This is for anyone that didn't see it done.
I really liked it, but it towed terrible with my rig in it, so I sold it and bought an RV.

                              The specs:
                              HD stabilizer jacks
3,500 btu A/C with heat strip
                              6 gal 110/propane water heater
Phone charging station with voltage display
31 gal black 31 gal grey 51 gal fresh
                              12v water pump
                              Vinyl plank flooring
                              2 Windows
2 powered roof vents, 1 non with rain covers
36x34 shower with retracting shower door
                              Toilet
                              Sony stereo & 2 6x9 speakers
                              Blue LED awning lights
                              42" light bar on back
                              Backup camera
                              Tongue Battery
                              Electric tongue jack

                              21' Awning with new fabric
Tongue set up for 2 spares, or the tires off the front of my rig
