Question car issue

ok GF's 98 neon blew the timing belt and maybe the water pump..i read on line that these are interfence motors which means it more than likely bent the valves... one garage I talked to said about 1000 to fix it if it was the timing belt...

So would it be cheaper to swap engines? or try and fix this myself( swap out head and replace water pump)? of course never done it or have the ablity to do the engine swap?

when i took the cover off the right fender well I found the timing belt rapped up behind the harmonic balancer wheel and some plastic peices fell out...
engine only has 88k on it.

If its a sohc it didnt bend the valves. The worst part about doing the timing belt is getting the crank pulley off, better have the right puller. If you decide to do it yourself be sure and replace the water pump and belt tensioner. Guys that work with me can ussually do the whole job in less than 3 hours.
I just did my daughters a few months ago and put new belts, battery, thermastat, flushed the cooling sytem, replaced the tensioner and water pump in around 5 hours. If you dont want to mess with it and are interested in selling it I may be interested in buying it.

like he said ive had good luck with just sticking a new belt and water pump on and trying it but if its a dohc is toast might check with autozone about renting the puller for the crank pully and giving it a go its nearly the same as your sammuri just line up the dots or arrows and go wih it
