Carfax
My Toyota has 2 vin numbers. On the door sticker is the regular 16 digit number. The dash tag is gone and on the door jam a plate is pop riveted on with a 10 digit number that says special identification number. This is also the number on the title. I had a hard time getting it insured and today I had to have the dealer cut a key. That was fun. But I think I would like to know some history if its available

if its rivited in the jam area it was assigned a special number from the state patrol after an inspection..ie got stolen and dash was damaged.. self assembled cars have the same thing assigned to them..they get inspected and since it was built from scratch it will need a number to move forward with the lisenceing and insurance..

Interesting. So back to my original question. Can anyone run a carfax?

nope completely different... salvage will still have your standard vin (most of the time unless the repair shop forgets to swap it over on a dash replacement) and the the replacement parts would be inspected with receipts to support the replacement parts but not a "how well and safe the vehicle was repaired" inspection..
if i have a title for a 69 vw and build a buggy.i have a title with a vin but the vin plate is missing and i get it inspected they will issue a new vin as a replacement to attach to the vehicle as a legal form of identification attached to the vehicle usually in a specified location. as far as your rig tony im not sure if "carfax"will have anything because it only has what is "reported to carfax" and has been proven to be a joke imo. car dealers are usually set up with carfax and give free reports if you know of anyone it might be a place to try ?

The thing is my insurance Co had a fit when I told them the number. Had to send a copy of the title and then they still weren't sure it could be insured. The bmv couldn't tell my why it was like this just that it had been licensed in Ohio before and Toyota today had never heard of such a thing. If what you are saying is true then I would think one of those three would know about it. Right?

Don't put too much faith into the title agencies. When I replaced the body on my CJ I had to deal with them and the OSP. I was getting ready to kill the guy at the title place when he wanted to charge me tax on all of the parts on it. A lady came over and told the jerk to title it as a 1990 replica and there was no extra tax.

like tom said.....most of them dont have the brains to blow there own nose...you said you have the original vin on the title i say try it first and maybe that will spark something as to when it needed to be inspected if that doesnt work call the state patrol and ask one of the nice people how you could go about solving this delema.. there is an inspection station on cin-day road that i had a salvage done at and dealt with trooper brown who actually wasnt that bad to deal with. do not take the vehicle there just ask your questions over the phone first and let us know.

BMV is a joke as far as info. There are 2 not far from me. If ever I have issue with one I go to other. Example once I was told I had to present title because I had not had tags in couple years and they claimed they were not allowed to do it. I went to the other one got tags no problem. When I was 16 I went to get tags they said I need parent to sign went to the other got tags without parent signing. I think they just make stuff up cause they are bored lol

Sorry if I confused anyone. The title does not have the original vin. It has the 10 digit other vin on it

The highway patrol post I was at had one patrolman that takes care of the kit cars.( he wasn't there the day I went but he answered his phone and told the other officer how to do it). That is the one you want to talk to salvage, restorations, and kit cars. Good luck.

Looks like Scott nailed it. Most likely stolen and recovered from a chop shop and/or very badly damaged. I would like to get further into this. Interesting
