i try to drive mine once every few weeks to keep it fresh,more so in the winter as the wife gets my DD jeep in the snow.

Hey, you knew it was a rustbucket when you bought it.
 Seriously, though... I don't really think it was the sitting. I got it second-hand after a paving company. I'm sure they used it to spread salt... Sitting didn't help, but short of stripping the entire thing down to bare metal, I don't think you were gonna stop it.
