i try to drive mine once every few weeks to keep it fresh,more so in the winter as the wife gets my DD jeep in the snow.

Seriously, though... I don't really think it was the sitting. I got it second-hand after a paving company. I'm sure they used it to spread salt...

Sitting didn't help, but short of stripping the entire thing down to bare metal, I don't think you were gonna stop it.
